Roundup: Golf wins in Ohio

The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team hadn’t won an invitational title since it won the Mid-American Conference Championship in 2008, but that changed Sunday when the team shot a 296 in the final round to win the 41st annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate championship in Columbus, Ohio. EMU’s victory came against competition from the likes of Penn State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Kent State, Charlotte, Ohio State, Wisconsin, North Texas, Houston and Xavier. Cam Burke (a 70 on Sunday) led the Eagles, ending the three-day competition with a score of 210.

Baseball wins two

The Eastern Michigan University Eagles hoped for a sweep over Bowling Green State University over the weekend in their three-game set but had to settle for two after a 4-3 loss Sunday. EMU (12-16, 4-2) scored in the fourth when Wally Gerbus hit a sacrifice bunt to drive in Ken Battison.

Men's track and field sports All-Americans

The Eastern Michigan men’s track and field distance medley relay team took its school record setting team to the NCAA National Championships over the weekend in Fayetteville, Ark., and came away with a fifth-place finish and All-American honors. “As they now join the elite membership of EMU Track and Field Record Holders and All-Americans,” EMU coach John Goodridge said in a release. The relay team of David Brent, Ackeem Forde, Blake Figgins and Curtis Vollmar ran a time of 9:38.44. “This foursome has been on fire the past month, gaining increased confidence weekly and culminating the past three weekends with this realization and accomplishment of winning a combined four MAC Championships in the mile, 3,000-meter, 5,000-meter and DMR,” Goodridge said. “I’m very proud of these guys for breaking a 15-year-old EMU record, being one of the elite national DMRs in the nation and coming home All-Americans.” The record in mention was broken by the All-Americans March 5 at the Alex Wilson invitational in South Bend, Ind.

Roundup: Dobbins back in the game

The Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team split its contests last week, winning against the University of Toledo 74-59, and losing to Northern Illinois 69-77. In the game against Toledo, senior forward Justin Dobbins returned after a six-game absence and scored 18 points to go along with his five rebounds.
