Strong winds damage Convocation Center awning

Part of the awning over the main entrance to the Convocation Center was blown off in the strong winds Monday. The main entrance to the building is closed until further notice. Debris has blown into Rynearson Stadium, but has not reached the football field.


“I plan on bundling up and wearing a whole bunch of clothes, because some of the buildings on campus have the heat on and some don’t. You just have to make sure you stay warm out here.”Dejanique Hawkins, junior, secondary education major

According to University of Michigan weather observer, Dennis F. Kahlbaum, Tuesday morning’s low of 11 degrees was the second coldest temperature recorded, in the state, for Nov.

Foster twins epitomize TRUEMU

Fraternal twins, Brett and Brock Foster, are as different as night and day and have built their reputations at Eastern Michigan University by investing in the mantra that building community means putting yourself out there. “If you want it, it’s something you have to try and do, it’s not going to come to you,” Brock, an international business major, said.

Panel discusses the role of local female leaders

The office of campus life held On Top of the Town Monday evening. The event was held to allow female students and guests from across the university talk and network with each other to expand their horizons. "We're trying to introduce undergrad and graduate students to the leadership in the community," Gabriela Majeska, student coordinator for leadership, said.

EMU's Betty Adams competes in College Student Food Stars competition

Congratulations to The Eastern Echo’s own Betty Adams, who was one of the final 8 amateur chefs Sunday competing in the first annual College Student Food Stars cook off. The College Student Food Stars was held at the Holiday Inn in Ann Arbor and contestants were asked to prepare dishes by: Using only one appliance Have only three ingredients in the dish Work within a budget of $10 or less Prepare the dish in 10 minutes or less The overall 2014 champion was Daniela Friedman who won with “A college twist on a classic sundae,” Claire Hillman won the “Best late night Snack” category with her Peanut Butter Stuffed Teriyaki Burgers, and Sarah Adcok won the “Best dorm support” category with her Rocky Mountain Dew Cake. “The Rocky Mountain Cake was a cake mix made with only mountain dew,” Adams said.

Bacteria: The good, the bad, and the ugly

Students and alumni filled the Student Center Auditorium Thursday for the George Liepa Sigma Xi Lecture, “Your Gut... More than a Digestive System.” Presenter Gary Huffnagle, Ph.D., is a professor at the University of Michigan Medical School of Microbiology and Immunology who actively facilitates research studies on opportunistic fungal pathogens, fungal bacterial microbiome and the immune system during respiratory disease.
