Commentary: NFL playoffs begin; Lions end valiantly

·

It’s been weeks since my last column ran on Dec. 8 and, yes, a lot has changed. Roundup: Wrestling falls short in Dec.

·

Eastern Michigan University wrestling hasn’t won a meet since Dec. 3, but not for a lack of trying. The Eagles took on two ranked opponents in December, No. 9 Northwestern, and No. 24 Missouri, and their other dual meet loss came to the Big Ten’s Indiana.

While you were out shopping, opening presents and sipping on eggnog, the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball team was hard at work over winter break. The Eagles went 4-0 between Dec. 11-28 the Eagles’ record advanced to 9-5 on the season.

Lions could have good 2011 season

·

Last Sunday the Detroit Lions lost to the Chicago Bears 24-20 in a game we have all seen many times before. The Lions came out playing extremely hard in the first half controlling the game with their stout defensive line. Even with Kyle Vanden Boesch out and rookie of the century Ndamukong Suh drawing double and triple teams on every play (not to mention more than a few uncalled holds).

Eagles basketball needs road victories soon

·

It’s easy to look at the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team’s record and say it has been a disappointment so far. Picked to place as high as second in the Mid-American Conference West Division, the Eagles were riding the momentum of last season’s moderately successful campaign, hoping it would transfer to this season.

EMU head coach Ron English is 2-22 in two seasons. He lost his first 18 games.

Commentary: English needs positive results fast

·

Everyone is saying it. Coach Ron English needs to find solutions for the mounting problems of this football team quickly. This season English picked up his first two wins of his head-coaching career. His first win came at Ball State, where the Eagles won during overtime.

Commentary: Tigers already busy, recruiting Martinez, adding offensive skill

·

Tired of baseball? Ready to take a nice long break before easing into the Hot Stove league? The Tigers sure aren’t. Having already signed right-handed setup man Joaquin Benoit to a three-year deal worth $16.5 million last week, they continued to throw their financial weight around coming to an agreement with former Red Sox and Indians catcher Victor J. Martinez for four years and $50 million.
