Catcher loves that EMU program really competes

“I’ve been told since day one that I’ve always had a love for baseball,” said Eastern Michigan University catcher Matt Hitt. When Hitt was a little kid, he loved to play catch with his dad just about anywhere and soon fell in love with the game.

The Eastern Michigan men’s baseball team clinched a spot in the Mid-American Conference tournament winning two out of three games against Buffalo on the road this weekend.

This past week has been a proud one for the Eastern Michigan Football team. Lattarius Thomas has signed with the Indianapolis Colts and Jabar Westerman has been drafted by the CFL.

Women's basketball hires coach

After a process that lasted exactly three weeks, Eastern Michigan University hired former Kansas assistant coach Tory Verdi to lead its women’s basketball team into the future.


Eastern Michigan freshman starting pitcher Ryan Lavoie (3-3) picked up the loss, allowing four runs in the first inning. Redshirt senior Bo Kinder went 1-for-4 on the day and had one RBI.

The Eastern Michigan University baseball team took a hard loss on Sunday during its senior game against Bowling Green. The team won its two previous games against the team, 10-3 on Friday and 6-0 on Saturday but was sloppy in the third game and committed a season-high six errors on the day losing 9-3.

The red-hot RedHawk offense proved to be too much for the Eastern Michigan University women’s softball team as it fell twice during the weekend series.

“The thing I like most about softball is that it is a team sport that allows individuals to come together to play for a common goal,” outfielder McKenna Russ said.

“She just gets it.” You have no idea how many times I heard that while covering the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team. But it’s true – Tavelyn James “gets” it. While every sport has its superstars, it’s rare to possess what James has.

Middle-distance runner loves art

“I don’t really know why I started running,” senior middle-distance runner Beverly Elcock said. Elcock actually began swimming at the YMCA with her older sister before she fell in love with running.

Sophomore started playing baseball at age five

·

Sam Ott was five years old when he started playing baseball. He is left-handed and therefore, limited to where he can play, but he has played every position a lefty can: all of the outfield positions, first base and pitcher. Fast forward to high school where he earned many honors.
