Voronko shines in 3,000-meter steeplechase

Sophomore Victoria Voronko’s dazzling performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase highlighted the Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s track and field performances at the National Collegiate Athletic Association East Regional in Greensboro, N.C., this past weekend. Voronko qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships finishing ninth in 10 minutes 8.10seconds, which broke her own school record of 10:15.74. In the 100-meter hurdle finals, freshman Vanessa Clerveaux finished 20th with a time of 13.53.


EMU softball team seniors bid teammates farewell

The graduating seniors of the 2013 Eastern Michigan University softball team are all in the midst of making the transition from college student to various different endeavors, but before they begin, they took the time to leave some parting words for the Eagle community. Nellie Coquillard, Jenna Ignowski, Courtney Nicholson, Courtney Loe and Katy Blaharski all played their respective roles on the team, but all five had different words of advice to give and different lessons to take away from their time at EMU. Coquillard and Ignowski both said the key to success was working hard and taking ownership of one’s destiny.



Stanton a softball catalyst

The 2013 season was a disappointing one for the Eastern Michigan University softball team, as it finished the year with a 17-33-1 (7-14 Mid-American Conference) record. The team closed out the spring with a 2-0 loss to the Akron University Zips on May 5.

Summer is a time for many Eastern Michigan University students, including Lindsay Rich, a pitcher on the EMU softball team, to go on vacation.


Student devotes life to sports

For most sports, the coaches are the older, wiser adults who come to guide the team to glory. For Ann Arbor Huron High School’s football and wrestling teams, the age gap may be smaller than most. Eastern Michigan University sophomore and special education major JaBree Harris, 20, began his coaching career this year as the River Rats’ head wrestling coach.

Men finish 3rd, women 5th in MAC track tournament

The Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Mid-American Conference outdoor championships last weekend in Akron, Ohio. The women finished fifth with an overall score of 82.50 points, while the men tallied 142.50, good enough for third. “We always hope to be in contention for the title, but we had some injuries and setbacks after the indoor season and we knew that we were going to be shorthanded for this meet,” EMU women’s coach Sue Parks said.

Reagan Briggs: More than just an EMU thrower

Reagan Briggs is a redshirt sophomore who is a hammer thrower for the Eastern Michigan University track and field team. She comes to EMU from Bloomdale, Ohio, which is 90 minutes away from Ypsilanti.

The spring/summer semester is in full swing, but don’t worry; there is a way for the students staying on campus or commuting for their summer classes to get a break from their busy schedule, as the baseball team as well as the men’s and women’s track teams are still competing.

Outgoing senior catcher Courtney Loe has been a mainstay on the Eastern Michigan University softball team since transferring to EMU from West Liberty University, in West Liberty, WV, following the 2011 season.

Former EMU football player passes away

Former Eastern Michigan University football running back/punt returner Marcus Mathews passed away Wednesday at the age of 48, the university announced in a press release Friday morning. Mathews graduated from Cooley High School in his hometown of Detroit, Mich.

Softball player is named MAC West Player of Week

Amanda Stanton is the starting second baseman for the Eastern Michigan University softball team and was also named Mid-American Conference West division Player of the Week last week following a stellar week, in which she hit 7-for-14 with three home runs (including a grand slam), and raised her batting average from .301 to .325.

Men’s golf places 13th of 18 in weekend event

The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team traveled to Indiana this weekend to compete in the Boilermaker Invitational hosted by Purdue University. The team came in 13th place out of the 18 teams competing. The Eagles scored a 914 in the two-day event on the Birck Boilermaster Golf Complex’s Kampen Course.

Softball team preps for weekend games

Coming off a series sweep against the Bowling Green State University Falcons, the Eastern Michigan University softball team sets its sights on a Friday doubleheader against the Miami University of Ohio RedHawks and games against the Ball State University Cardinals on Saturday and Sunday. “We have to go out and keep playing,” EMU coach Karen Baird said.


	Glenn Bryant was suspended from the EMU men’s basketball team Wednesday following his arraignment on felony assault and domestic violence charges.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the Eastern Michigan University Athletic Department announced the suspension of forward Glenn Bryant from the men’s basketball team following his arraignment on charges of felony assault and domestic violence.
