Gamergate has to stop

·

This past summer a massive scandal rocked the gaming community. The ex-boyfriend of Zoe Quinn, an indie game developer, posted a blog entry accusing Zoe of cheating on him with a gaming journalist from the website Kotaku in order to secure positive press for one of her games. This sparked a firestorm in the gaming community bringing to light concerns over the integrity of gaming journalists and problems of misogyny and sexism in video games and the gaming community. Almost immediately gamers on the websites like 4chan and Reddit began harassing Quinn, and attacking her character.

Broken, but not bankrupt

·

The city of Ypsilanti is in trouble. City revenue decreased by -0.56 percent between 2004 and 2013, while debt connected to the Water Street project accumulated.Given these problems, it is understandable that citizens would come to the conclusion that the city is a candidate for Chapter 9 bankruptcy.

Religious freedom needs to be considered

·

Bait and switch on gay marriage?Over the course of this debate, one refrain has been consistent by those advocating in support of gay marriage: The religious liberties of clergy and religious officials will not be compromised.Even when shop owners are sued for respectfully declining to provide services to gay marriage ceremonies, the refrain continues.

Campaign carpetbaggers

·

I would think it untoward of an Ohioan, Indianan, or Wisconsinite to move to Michigan and instantly call themselves a Michigander, but I would think it infringing of an Ohioan, an Indian, or a Wisconsinite to come to Michigan simply to interfere an election.

Government's response to Ebola is enough

·

Ebola has dominated news headlines over the past few weeks. Since late September three cases of Ebola have been confirmed in the U.S.: one Liberian man who has since passed away from Ebola and two nurses that had cared for him who are slowly recovering.

Detroit: Still intact

·

Of course, people will say that in Detroit’s bankruptcy the city has been sliced and diced and sold off for all of its parts, or that the rich will take it for all it has, but that just isn’t true. When Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy on July 18, 2013, it filed with $18 billion in debt.

Should Teresa Pecovic have been deported?

·

I understand why Pecovic was deported; she failed to report to immigration authorities. But Pecovic had a Social Security number, a driver’s license, a job, filed and paid taxes, was educated in a Catholic high school, grew up in Detroit, was fluent in English, had no criminal record aside from her aforementioned offense, and was born in a country with which the U.S. is at peace.

Early voting is essential

·

On Sept. 29, the Supreme Court blocked an early voting measure in Ohio, which allowed voting to begin 35 days before Election Day.

EMU administration out of step with students

·

Every year since I became a student at Eastern Michigan University, students have complained about parking. I, a commuter, even wrote a column about why parking was not as bad as people thought. However, as enrollment has gone up and I have had more experience, I agree that we need more parking that is convenient to students.

Detroit, sell the Lamborghini

·

Imagine if you saw a Lamborghini parked in the driveway of a glorious Art Deco mansion. What would you think? Maybe the owner is a gentleman recently retired, and the car was a 65th birthday present he gave to himself. Maybe there were less than a hundred of its kind ever made, and the car carries historical and sentimental value.

Good news for the revolution

·

Do you ever wonder why it seems no one’s trying to fix what’s wrong in our world? Count ‘em off: economic inequality, the disaster of economic globalization, the threat of individualism, the corporate takeover of governments, and our inability to control money in politics.
