The Eastern Echo’s sports editor, Andrew Mascharka, was awarded one of the Michigan Press Association Foundation’s community journalism scholarships. Mascharka is from Ann Arbor and a junior at Eastern.
An Eastern Michigan University German professor won the 2015 American Association of Teachers of German award. Margrit Zinggeler received the award for excellence in teaching Austrian language and culture.
At the Board of Regents meeting on Tuesday, the chair and vice chair were re-elected. Mike Morris will keep his position as chair, and Mary Treder Lang will remain the vice chair. Morris is an Eastern Michigan alumnus.

Monday, Dec. 14 The Art College will be hosting a free exhibition, starting Monday and will show all day at the Ford Gallery.
Student Government invited students to Club Halle to take a break from their studies before finals week on Thursday in the Bowen Field House. “[I came tonight] to have some fun and get away from homework,” sophomore special education major Taylor Baugh said. After months of planning and a day of setting up, the field house was filled with inflatables, cotton candy and a DJ from 6-9 p.m. “We’ve been planning this for about 5 months,” student body vice president Anjali Martin said.
Former Oklahoma City policeman Daniel Holtzclaw was found guilty of multiple charges of sexual assault, Thursday. This 29-year old man, who according to CNN is half white and half Japanese, has been the center of another episode of the intersection between race and police in the United States. He is also an Eastern Michigan football alum.

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson held a campaign stop at Eastern Michigan University's Convocation Center Wednesday.
Campus Life hosted a Snack & Study session before the week of fianls from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., Tuesday. “I came to tonight’s event to actually study, be around a lot of people who are doing the same thing as me and whose focus are their studies, just like me,” Destani Goodman, freshman elementary education major said.

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents approved an overall increase of 4 percent to university residence halls and apartments and a 1.5 percent increase to meals plans for the 2016-17 academic year at the Board's regular meeting Tuesday in Welch Hall. A cost of a residence hall double room will range from $4,108 to $5,296, depending on the facility.The platinum 19-meals-a-week plan will cost $4,983. More than 3,800 students live on campus, up from 3,240 in 2010.
Protesters marched into Eastern Michigan University's regular Board of Regents meeting Tuesday to address EMU's affiliation with the Education Achievement Authority. EMU signed an agreement with the EAA in June 2011.

The Ypsilanti branch of Meals on Wheels, 1110 W Cross St, was busy with volunteers on Saturday. This was a community outreach program that included a Holiday Home Tour in the morning and Taste of Ypsi in the evening.
