Students Organize 4 Syria held a discussion about the current status of Syrian refugees Thursday afternoon in the Student Center. The purpose of this discussion was to engage in an open dialogue with Eastern Michigan University students about Syrian refugees following the stereotypes and political statements from recent terrorist attacks. In particular, subsequent to the attack on Paris by the Islamic State terrorist group, State Governor Rick Snyder has paused recent efforts on allowing refugees to enter Michigan. Ahnas Alzahabi, a senior business administration student, is the president of SOS.
Twenty-five women attended the weekly SELF Love meeting Friday evening in the Student Center. Many who attended described the organization as a safe haven for them.
The Student Center's ballroom was filled with well over 100 people for Diwali, Sunday night. This party, held by the Indian Student Association, was for the Hindi holiday. Diwali is a festival of light and celebrated a victory of good over evil, Murali Jujjavarapu, the association’s president said, "Our ultimate goal is to provide diversity and to allow everyone," Shruti Somani, vice president of communications for the association, said. By the D.J., there was a poster of the goddess Lakshmi.
Steven Cole, Student Government president, issued executive order 102-02 at the Senate Meeting Tuesday night in the Student Center, to form an ad-hoc commission to explore the process of funding Eastern Michigan University athletics. Senators Joshua Starr and Sam Jones-Darling support the formation of the Athletics Commission to discuss the “complicated topic” and recommend best-spending practices of student tuition dollars. Senator Joseph Pernicano said he thinks the commission is a great idea. “I think this is something a lot of students, not just in Student Government, would definitely be happy that we are working to establish this,” he said.
The Office of International Students and Scholars is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Dinner at 6 p.m., Friday in the Student Center Ballroom.
Eastern Michigan University students are working to create a co-ed water polo club. While the club is not yet official, students started meeting and practicing in late October. Sequoia Farrell-Williams, a junior criminal justice major, is one of the creators and leaders of the club.

Eastern Michigan University’s Mentorship Access Guidance in College and Unmasked: Looking Beneath the Surface Programs held a video and discussion night on Thursday in Marshall. Members from both programs discussed human trafficking, prostitution, homelessness and foster care with the fourteen attendees.
Pinky Promise invited Elder Rev. Cheryl Crawford Sangster, Pastor Timothy Alden and Rev. David Bullock to speak about the Proverbs 31 woman, the virtuous woman, Friday afternoon in McKenny Hall. Gabrielle Burgess-Smith, public relations major and Pinky Promise president, said the organization is a women’s Christian organization. “We strive for purity and multiple facets for God with an emphasis [on] no sex until marriage,” Burgess-Smith said. Lorraine McKnight, senior career coach in the University Center for Advising and Counseling said she believes it is important to remind people of their value to God in terms of how society sees us. “[This event] was very good,” McKnight said.
A new student organization, Progressives at EMU, held a protest march through campus, Thursday afternoon. "We're here as part of Million Student March that's happening across the nation,” Kira Dallaire, a graduate student in special education for students with learning disabilities, said.
