Students check out posters and art for sale at EMU's First Annual Washi Con

EMU's first annual washi con sees a diverse crowd

 A crowd of artists, cosplayers, anime lovers, gamers, and more came together at EMU’s first annual anime and gaming convention, Washi Con, in McKenny Hall this past Saturday. The theme for the event was “the reciprocal relationship between eastern and western media”. “I never been to a convention before and always wanted to,” said EMU senior social work major, Jasmyn Tooles.

Student government urges regents to act in the interest of the university

Student Government passed S.Res-102 unanimously, 18-0, at the Senate meeting Tuesday night in the Student Center. In passing the resolution, the Senate voted to “urge the Board of Regents to act in the best interest of the university by voting at its meeting on February 5, 2016, to immediately provide notice of intent to end any affiliation with the Education Achievement Authority.” The Senate passed an earlier version of the resolution at their previous meeting.

Honors College kicks off Star Lecture Series with Dorris Fields

The Honors College kicked off the 2016 Star Lecture series with Dr. Doris Fields. The first installment in the series was titled “A Well Lived Life: Improving race relations on campus, within the community and in workplace.” This lecture filled the Halle Library Auditorium with Honors college students along with students of Dr. Fields, to hear her enthusiastic perspective on learning about and approving race relations.

Keynote speaker Barbara Arnwine enlightenes students on MLK Day

To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., Keynote Speaker and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, Barbara Arnwine, spoke to students and the community in the Student Center that day, reinstating the importance of the history and movements that are the reason behind how far society has come today. Many community members and students attended the event to hear the words of Arnwine, and educate themselves about the foundation Martin Luther King Jr.

Just last week in Ypsilanti, a brand new Goodwill store opened its doors in high hopes to benefit the community and create affordable options for those in need and students. In order to gain press and raise community awareness to donate and shop at this new location, the store held private tours between Jan.

A new tear in the Eastern Michigan University Indoor Practice Facility was discovered Wednesday morning according to EMU officials. This is after the original tear caused the collapse of the facility on Nov. 29.


Student Government passes resolution against regents' decision to postpone EAA vote

Student Government passed a resolution at the senate meeting Tuesday night to “voice no confidence” in the Board of Regents’ decision to postpone a vote on Eastern Michigan University’s involvement in the Education Achievement Authority. S.Res.-102-08, authored by Senator Jones-Darling, said that the Board of Regents has failed to recognize the negative impacts the EAA places on the student body. At the last Board of Regents meeting, the regents postponed a vote that would decide whether EMU stayed in the EAA for another year or not. “This Student Government has been constant in telling the regents over and over and over on behalf of the student body that this is not okay,” Jones-Darling said.
