Protestors bring signs to Ypsi City Council meeting

Ypsilanti City Council held its regular meeting in the McKenny Ball room Tuesday, Oct. 20. About 28 protestors holding signs lined the back of the ballroom. Some of the signs read “danger police in area,” “justice delayed is justice denied,” “Black lives matter.” Student’s marched from Eastern Michigan University DPS to McKenny chanting “hey now hey now, we want freedom freedom... racist cops we don’t need them need them” “The fact this meeting is on campus is important it gives students a chance to have a voice, this needs to be talked about,” Shaina Johnson, senior, communications major said.

Thursday, Oct. 22 The Initial Teacher Participation Program will be hosting a group advising session from 3:30 - 5 p.m., Thursday, in 206 Porter.

EMU students compete in interior design challenge

Four teams of interior design students participated in a Designer’s Challenge at the Home and Lifestyle Show of Michigan on Saturday and Sunday at the Convocation Center. The event allowed students to turn blank spaces into their own designs.

LGBTRC hosts I AM Project

Eastern Michigan University's LGBT Resource Center is hosting the I AM: The LGBTG Project Debrief as part of OUTober Tuesday evening, in room 352 of the Student Center. I AM started with a display in the Student Center.

Police Blotter, Oct. 18

Monday, Oct. 12 An EMU student approached the police at 9:38 a.m. The student reported a sexual assault around Jarvis Street, on Oct.


Students went rock climbing as part of their course.

Students take learning outside the classroom

Students taking PHED 309, Methods of Teaching Outdoor Pursuits and Adventure Education, went rock climbing on Friday at Planet Rock, Ann Arbor, as part of their course. The course is newly required for the sports performance and fitness entrepreneurship major. Stan Dinkel, 32, a physical education teacher for elementary students, was asked to teach the course as a guest instructor because of his extensive knowledge and experience with outdoor activities. Stan has two bachelor’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University, in special education and physical education.  He said he is grateful to have the opportunity to teach the course. PHED 309 fall activities include cycling, hiking, team building, technology apps concerning fitness, orienteering, trust falls and kayaking.  In the winter course there will be weather appropriate activities such as skiing and ice fishing.  The purpose of the course is to provide students a wider range of skills in the outdoors and be able to have them pass that on to future participants.

The Women's Resource Center will be hosting True Life, all day Monday through Wednesday in room 310 Student Center.

MESA holds drive for Syrian refugees

Eastern Michigan University’s Middle Eastern Student Association is collecting donations for refugees, but the clothing, appliances, money and furniture gathered will not be sent overseas.

Student Government holds committee meetings

The Student Government Business and Finance Committee passed 15 allocations during regular committee meetings Tuesday night in the Student Center. Club Softball was granted $350 for game-related fees. I.M.A.G.E received $150 to bring a D.J.

The Star Lecture Series continues with Patrick Barry

Professor Patrick Barry, president of the Eastern Michigan University Alumni Association, told 300 hundred students on Tuesday night in the Student Center Ballroom that they can’t be perfect, but they can be damn good. Barry, from the department of communication, media and theatre arts, was the second speaker in the Star Lecture Series, hosted by The Honors College.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
