EMU student creates scholarship through t-shirts

College can be tough, especially with the costs that comes with it. Eastern Michigan student Joey Stinson found this out firsthand but decided to help out students in similar situations by creating a scholarship using money generated from T-Shirts that he designed.

The Vision Volunteer Center is going to bridge the gap between EMU students interested in doing volunteer work and the charities that need volunteers.

The Business and Finance Committee granted three allocations at its regular meeting Tuesday night in the Student Center The following student organizations received funding: Detroit Does Well was granted $645 to host an event. New Life Students received an allocation of $370 to hold an event. College Democrats was allocated $175 to host an event. The Business and Finance Committee’s Student Organization Allocation budget is at $1,646.71. Maya Rich, Director of Social Justice, said Student Government registered 160 people to vote during the Residence Hall Crawl held on Jan.

The Snow Health Center hosts Monday Mindfulness every Monday. This is a drop-in meditation and relaxation service provided by Counseling and Psychological Services.

EMU's first annual washi con sees a diverse crowd

 A crowd of artists, cosplayers, anime lovers, gamers, and more came together at EMU’s first annual anime and gaming convention, Washi Con, in McKenny Hall this past Saturday. The theme for the event was “the reciprocal relationship between eastern and western media”. “I never been to a convention before and always wanted to,” said EMU senior social work major, Jasmyn Tooles.

Student government urges regents to act in the interest of the university

Student Government passed S.Res-102 unanimously, 18-0, at the Senate meeting Tuesday night in the Student Center. In passing the resolution, the Senate voted to “urge the Board of Regents to act in the best interest of the university by voting at its meeting on February 5, 2016, to immediately provide notice of intent to end any affiliation with the Education Achievement Authority.” The Senate passed an earlier version of the resolution at their previous meeting.

Honors College kicks off Star Lecture Series with Dorris Fields

The Honors College kicked off the 2016 Star Lecture series with Dr. Doris Fields. The first installment in the series was titled “A Well Lived Life: Improving race relations on campus, within the community and in workplace.” This lecture filled the Halle Library Auditorium with Honors college students along with students of Dr. Fields, to hear her enthusiastic perspective on learning about and approving race relations.

According to the Center for Disease Control, around 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States every year.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
