EMU employees to lose jobs over budget cuts

Ten EMU employees lost their jobs Monday evening due to budget cuts. Although the number of job losses are known, the actual positions and people have not yet been identified. As interim President Donald Loppnow explained in an email to faculty and staff members, EMU employees who could potentially be cut, will be assessed over a 30-day “bumping” period while Welch Hall negotiates with union members.

According to the EMU event calendar, the National Library of Medicine will be exploring the books with a six person panel who will discuss “the Renaissance scientific traditions of alchemy, astrology and natural philosophy.” This free event will take place each day this week and will run all day long.

A possible look at EMU's dining services

The Board of Regents is considering privatizing Eastern Michigan University’s Dining Services. This cost saving measure could affect concessions at the Crossroads Marketplace, Dinning Commons, Convocation Center and half a dozen of the small shops sprinkled throughout campus. “It could turn out we stay with the current dinning services,” Executive Director of Media Relations Geoff Larcom said to a journalist from M-Live last May. According to the Detroit Free Press, the move comes from a report calling for the university to reduce expenditures by $27 million. A request for proposals on a privatization plan was released by the university on April 25, with a due date of May 13.

State approved $30 million for renovations to Strong Hall

The Michigan State Legislature approved $30 million in funding to Eastern Michigan University for the renovation of Strong Hall, a building that is part of the main campus science complex, Wednesday night. “I’m excited to think of what we’ll be able to offer our students in terms of the classroom and laboratory experience in academic operations,” Interim EMU President Don Loppnow said in a press release from the university.

Swoop's Student Food Pantry creator awarded 'Outstanding Community Impact' award

This past April during the Michigan Campus Compact’s annual event at Michigan State University, Haley Moraniec, a social work major from Eastern Michigan University, was awarded the ‘Outstanding Community Impact’ award for her work in developing the Swoop’s Student Food Pantry at EMU. The pantry is solely campus-based and is dedicated to helping current EMU students with food assistance when in need.
