The lecture “Haunting the Edges of Social Justice: Disability Across Movements” which touches on how disability relates to social movements and social justice was presented by Alison Kafer, PhD, professor of feminist studies at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas on Thursday, March 17 in Halle Library. Kafer, who teaches feminist, environmental, and race and ethnicity studies said that she hopes that her lecture will teach people to look at disability in a new way and get more involved in activism.

EMU student dead Thursday night due to probable suicide

·

An EMU student was struck and killed by an Amtrak train, Thursday, just before midnight. According to a press release from the university that was emailed across campus, the victim was a young woman between the ages of 19-20 from Brownstown Michigan and a resident of Hill Hall. “Our thoughts and sympathy are with the victim’s family and friends,” the press release said.

EMU student helps raise over $100,000 through poetry

What do you do when you go back home from Eastern to visit your family? For EMU students such as Razjea Bridges-Fordham, she goes back to a city where she tries to avoid the water. Her immediate family is one of the lucky households in Flint, Michigan that do not receive city water for their faucets, but she has friends and family in the city that are connected to contaminated pipes.

Eastern Michigan University’s Upward Bound program is a Federally-funded pre-college academic program designed to provide students from Ypsilanti Community High Schools and Ypsilanti New Tech High School with the skills and motivation to move on to attend a university to obtain a college degree.

Philosophy series talks liberation of non-human anmials

The Philosophy Series invited professor of philosophy Dr. Corinne M. Painter from Washtenaw Community College on March 7 to speak about the genuine liberation of non-human animals. Painter explained took parts of her book, The Contemporary Crises of the Alienated Non-Human Animal: In Defense of the Vegan Imperative, and spoke about her views and ideas while connecting them to Marxism and liberation.


Members of Student Government listen to resolutions that were voted on at the Tuesday, March 8, regular meeting. 

Student government finds new funding for student organizations

The Student Government Senate passed a resolution 17-0-0 to amend the Student Government Budget at its weekly meeting Tuesday evening in the Student Center. The resolution calls to pull unused money from the budget and put that money in a new line item that will make it available for student organization funding.

Josh Rivedal talks mental illness to students

Josh Rivedal, actor, author and motivational speaker, spoke to 70 students about mental health issues and performed his one-man show “Kicking My Blue Jeans in the Butt” about recovering from clinical depression and suicidal thoughts in Pray-Harrold on Thursday, March 3. The one-man show was based on depression and his father’s suicide in 2009.


Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
