Student Senate Urges Administration to Put Students First in Housing Plan

 The Student Senate passed a resolution that urges the administration to keep the students best interests in mind, if planned to go forward with a public-private plan for housing on campus.  

Smith and Abuzir Elected Student Body President, Vice-President

Ethan Smith and Hajer Abuzir won the student body election for president and vice president. The unofficial results posted Thursday night declared them the winners.

EMU Hosts 11th Annual César Chávez Day of Celebration

 Students from local high schools joined EMU staff, faculty and students in celebrating the 11th Annual César Chávez Day of Celebration. Activities and presentations celebrated Latinx-American culture, addressed the lack of Latinx economic mobility and highlighted the importance of receiving a college degree.  

Ypsilanti City Council Passes Amendment to Regulate Zoning for the Sale and Recreational use of Firearms

 Ypsilanti City Council voted to pass an amendment that regulates the areas of the city where the sale and recreational use of firearms can be located at. 

Sen. Suchowesky Suspends Student Body Presidential Campaign

 Student Sen. Kirk Suchowesky announced on Saturday, March 5 that he’s suspending his campaign for Student Body President.  

Smith, Abuzir Talk Food Security, Improving Life for EMU Students

 The student body elections are quickly approaching. Ethan Smith was the first to announce his candidacy for student body president and hopes his voice will speak volumes to the administration. 

Director of Dining Services Meets with Student Senate

DECA Advances to International Conference

 Students Anthony Levesque and Collin Clem established EMU’s DECA team in the Fall 2018 semester. The attended the State Conference in February and will go on to compete at the International Conference in April. They hope more students will join them in competing in the coming semester. 

Sen. Balaal Hollings Talks Parking, Universal Calendar and New African American Resource Center

 Sen. Balaal Hollings announced on Feb. 21 that he would be running for Student Body President of Eastern Michigan University. Some of his main campaign promises include creating an African American Resource Center, creating a universal calendar for Student Organizations, and making changes to on-campus parking.

 Student Body President Candice Crutcher commented on the university’s consideration of the privatization of housing at the Student Government meeting on March 5.  

Student Government Discusses Parking, Handicap Door Access

 Student Government held a meeting on March 5 in McKenny Hall, with 13 Senators present. Discussion included a handicap door audit, an expansion of the parking lot time limit, reallocating the budget to increase funds for student organizations and creating a Martin Luther King Jr. poetry scholarship.
