The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating a shooting that left two men dead at the Aspen Chase Apartments on the 3000 block of International Drive in Ypsilanti Township. No arrests have been made at this time. The case is still being investigated.

The number of COVID-19 cases on campus have jumped from 10 cases to 50 as the state of Michigan has identified EMU’s campus as the site of an ongoing outbreak. Ten of the 108 beds reserved at EMU for quarantine or isolation are currently in use. Along with other precautions, Thanksgiving break has been extended to include Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24, giving students a full week of break.

The Student Senate meeting on Monday, Nov. 2, was cancelled due to a lack of quorum to hold the meeting. ”Senators had work, family, and class complications that came up, we were hoping that people could work around all of that, but it did not work out,” Student Body Vice President, Colton Ray, said regarding the short notice cancellation.
Eastern Michigan University’s Digital Divas and Digital Dudes program, the Mr. October Foundation, and GameAbove have partnered together to create a virtual after school science, for middle school students in metro-Detroit. According to the university, topics covered by the program will include, "healthcare, physics, HVAC, construction, wind power, hydroponics,“ along with others.
Ypsilanti’s Discrimination Ordinance now prevents “actual or perceived” discrimination based on someone’s prior misdemeanor and felony convictions. Victims of discrimination may file a lawsuit against anyone who violates the ordinance. Those who violate the ordinance may be subject to fines and state and federal law.
EMU alumna Krystle Dupree is running for Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education. If elected Dupree has three main goals as a Board of Education member: make the Board more accessible and accountable for the community; hire a more culturally responsive and representative staff; and increase the districts focus on Special Education.
With the passage of Senate Bill 757 and the township acquiring five more ballot scanners, Ypislanti Township Clerk Karen Lovejoy Roe believes the township is ready to count the more than 20,000 absentee ballots it expects.

On Oct. 27, 2020 the Student Senate Internal Affairs Committee met to approve a new senator application packet. Midway through the meeting an anonymous participant disrupted the meeting by broadcasting a pornographic film.
Eastern Michigan Student Senators were officially sworn into office on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020. The process was done virtually via Zoom. Non-elected executive board positions had been filled prior to the meeting and senators decided senate leadership. In deciding senate leadership, an issue regarding a Palestinian flag in the student government offices was brought to light.
With winter approaching, Ypsilanti City Council unanimously voted to extend sidewalk permits to qualifying restaurants in the city. The vote on Tuesday gives restaurants a chance to come up with creative ways to provide comfortable outdoor seating for their patrons.
On Wednesday, Oct. 21., the EMU Jazz Ensemble held their first live-streamed concert of the 2020-2021 academic year. The ensemble streamed the performance to viewers through Vimeo, while performing from the Alexander Music Building.

Of the 18 available senate positions on the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Student Government Senate, 11 have been filled. This leaves only 60% of the senate filled, with seven unfilled seats. The new student senate administration hopes to fill these seats and make changes to the application process because of COVID-19.
