Ypsi Votes: Sheriff Jerry Clayton seeks fourth term focusing on mental health and diversion programs

Sheriff Jerry Clayton is seeking his fourth term as the top law enforcement official in Washtenaw County. He was first elected in 2008 and had previously served for 20 years in various positions within the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department, including as a corrections officer, a deputy sheriff, and command officer. He also served as the Washtenaw County Jail administrator.

Congresswoman Dingell announces over $490,000 grant to improve Ypsilanti library and community

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI 12) announced on Monday, July 27, via press release, that the Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) and the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development received combined federal grants of over $490,000 provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The YDL received a total of $249,788, which will be used to enhance the library’s youth literacy text messaging service, Text and Learn for Kindergarten (TALK).

Housing insecurity in Washtenaw County is worsened by pandemic

Housing insecurity has only worsened across the US in the wake of the pandemic. With Michigan's eviction moratorium behind, and the end of federal unemployment benefits imminently ahead, some Washtenaw County tenants are at risk of housing insecurity. The Echo spoke with housing experts and leaders in Washtenaw County about housing insecurity throughout the pandemic.

EMU international students react to recent ICE visa policy

Eastern Michigan University’s international students spoke with the Echo about the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policy that strips international student of their visas if their coursework is fully online. EMU is among almost 60 U.S. universities to file a court brief supporting Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a case the colleges brought in opposition to the new visa rules.

Nicole Brown appointed as mayor pro-tempore

Nicole Brown was appointed unanimously to mayor pro-tempore on July 7 at the regular Ypsilanti City Council meeting. She will remain in office until the general election in November 2020. A former commissioner also voiced concerns about the public voice in the mayor's election as no city-wide vote will be held to elect a mayor until November 2022.






Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
