COVID-19 cases rise on campus as state officials suspend university operations

The number of COVID-19 cases on campus have jumped from 10 cases to 50 as the state of Michigan has identified EMU’s campus as the site of an ongoing outbreak. Ten of the 108 beds reserved at EMU for quarantine or isolation are currently in use. Along with other precautions, Thanksgiving break has been extended to include Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24, giving students a full week of break.

Student Government meeting cancelled due to lack of quorum

The Student Senate meeting on Monday, Nov. 2, was cancelled due to a lack of quorum to hold the meeting. ”Senators had work, family, and class complications that came up, we were hoping that people could work around all of that, but it did not work out,” Student Body Vice President, Colton Ray, said regarding the short notice cancellation.

College of Engineering and Technology launches after-school virtual science program

Eastern Michigan University’s Digital Divas and Digital Dudes program, the Mr. October Foundation, and GameAbove have partnered together to create a virtual after school science, for middle school students in metro-Detroit. According to the university, topics covered by the program will include, "healthcare, physics, HVAC, construction, wind power, hydroponics,“ along with others.

EMU alumna Krystle Dupree is running for Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education. If elected Dupree has three main goals as a Board of Education member: make the Board more accessible and accountable for the community; hire a more culturally responsive and representative staff; and increase the districts focus on Special Education.

Student Senate meetings reconvened since COVID-19 shutdowns; in a bid for leadership, senators discuss Palestinian flag controversy

Eastern Michigan Student Senators were officially sworn into office on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020. The process was done virtually via Zoom. Non-elected executive board positions had been filled prior to the meeting and senators decided senate leadership. In deciding senate leadership, an issue regarding a Palestinian flag in the student government offices was brought to light.

The campus crime map is a report of criminal activity that has been reported in the Ypsilanti area, as well as on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. The crimes included on this week’s map occurred over the dates Oct. 15 through Oct. 24, 2020.




Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
