Fish kill nets little proof of Asian carp

MILWAUKEE— Mop-up from the massive fish kill continued on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal Friday, and while officials said they’ve killed thousands of fish, as of Friday afternoon only one of them was confirmed to be an Asian carp.

Man, 19, pleads guilty to murder

The 19-year-old Ypsilanti resident arrested in the May shooting death of 18-year-old Cortez Donald pled guilty to second-degree murder. The information is according to a Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office release, which said Daniel Haywood pled guilty to a felony firearm charges in addition to the murder charge. The release said Haywood could face a minimum of 20 years in prison with the two convictions. The original incident took place on May 28, near Donald’s home at the 200 block Kirk Street in Ypsilanti Township.

Dr. Paul (Joe) Ramsey was struggling with his undergrads. Ramsey, an assistant education professor at Eastern Michigan University, wasn’t seeing his students making the proper connections in his SOFD 328-W class, Schools for a Diverse and Democratic Society.

For hundreds of years, politics has been a man’s game. The White House Project is determined to change that. The project is a non-profit organization whose goal is to get women into politics and leadership roles. It is done through teaching women how to run campaigns.

WASHINGTON _ The broadest revamp of financial regulation in seven decades cleared a key congressional committee Wednesday and will move next week to debate on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Afghanistan to get 30,000 troops

Announcing a major expansion of the war in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama on Tuesday said the swift deployment of 30,000 troops would be enough to break the Taliban before the soldiers begin coming home in mid-2011 – a bet he is making because the U.S. cannot afford a drawn-out, costly campaign.

Scholars to discuss links between loss, spirituality

Eastern Michigan University’s Holy Trinity Student Parish and Hillel at EMU, along with EMU’s Division of Academic Affairs, College of Arts and Sciences and several other academic departments, have teamed up to sponsor an event titled “Did God Survive the Holocaust: A Jewish/Catholic Conversation.” The discussion will take place at 7 p.m Monday in the EMU Student Center Ballroom.

Murder suspect fit for trial

Dominic Oyerinde was found competent to stand trial for open murder and car jacking charges by a Washtenaw County Circuit Court Judge for the death of his ex-girlfriend, 17-year-old Anna List, prompting Oyerinde, 20, to request to defend himself. He quietly said he wanted to defend himself instead of his current public defender, Timothy Niemann.
