EMU chooses community relations team

Eastern Michigan University’s new governmental and community relations team has been selected. Former Ann Arbor city councilman Leigh Greden was named executive director of governmental and community relations, pending approval by the Board of Regents. His appointment is effective March 22.

Vatican's Guy talks science

An astronomer from the Vatican spoke Wednesday at Eastern Michigan University on the relationship between religion and science. A large portion of Brother Guy Consolmagno’s discussion was about past relationships between the Vatican and astronomers.

Willow Run schools to get new software to aid core classes

The Willow Run Board of Education unanimously approved a new $18,000 software package to help failing high school students graduate. The software, called E-2020, provides digital instruction videos, text books, applications, homework, quizzes and tests for teachers to use in several core classes. “It’s a tool to provide content, not replace teachers,” said Greg Bishop, the software company’s representative, at Thursday night’s meeting. Regents listen to union pitch

More than two dozen Eastern Michigan University adjunct lecturers packed the seats at a Board of Regents meeting Tuesday, to voice their support for forming a union. Mark Wenzel and Peter Thomason, adjuncts at EMU, spoke on behalf of the Adjunct Lecturers’ Organizing Committee, the organization formed to help adjuncts organize.

Approximately 15 professors and environmental leaders attended a discussion on environmental sustainability last Friday,. The event was organized by Chris Mayda, associate professor of geography at Eastern Michigan University.

Downtown businesses could get $100K for developments

The city of Ypsilanti’s Downtown Development Authority is coordinating a Façade Grant application for business and property owners in the DDA districts.  The competitive grant program, funded through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, will afford property and business owners the opportunity to obtain up to a 50 percent match for façade improvements.

Forum scheduled to talk Ypsilanti schools' budget

Ypsilanti Public Schools announced it will be hosting a public forum Tuesday to discuss its pending budget cuts with the community. The announcement, made in a noon press release from the district, comes after the Board of Education decided to hold a series of meetings to involve the public in its decision-making process. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m.

President's Scholarship goes to 16

Sixteen Eastern Michigan University freshmen have been awarded the Presidential Scholarship, the largest academic award at EMU. The scholarship is a four-year full-ride award that pays 30 credit hours each year of in-state tuition, housing, food allowance and mandatory fees.

Bronwyn H. Bleakley, a candidate seeking a professorial position at Eastern Michigan University in evolutionary biology and genetics, gave a lecture titled, “Evolutionary Genetics of Cooperation and Cannibalism.”

Ypsilanti will get new city planner

The city of Ypsilanti will have a new city planner beginning Feb. 15. Teresa Gillotti, Ypsilanti’s Michigan State University Extension Planner, will replace City Planner Richard Murphy as he takes a new job with the Michigan Suburbs Alliance. “It happened fairly quickly that Murphy was offered a job from the Michigan Suburbs Alliance and had to quickly take it,” Gillotti said of the city planner position Thursday afternoon.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
