Fast track gives freshmen crash course

About 100 incoming freshmen and their parents gathered at the Student Center for Fast Track, last Thursday. Fast Track is the first step of orientation for first-year students; the remaining steps occur in the fall. The program is a basic crash-course for freshmen and their parents, giving an overview on everything on campus from general education requirements to financial aid to housing. April Badon, admissions adviser and host of the event, helped the new students travel around campus, get their student IDs and meet with offices on campus, while their parents stayed back in the Student Center Ballroom for presentations on the EMU way of life. Departments like financial aid, career services and tutoring had booths for the parents to visit.

IT official discusses department's role

Chief Information Officer Carl R. Powell held a question-and-answer session last Thursday in the Student Center about technology at Eastern Michigan University. The conversation, tagged “Coffee with the CIO,” was open to all and gave people the opportunity to ask questions centered on the development of IT at EMU.


Adjunct lecturers address the Board of Regents on April 20. An Eastern official said the agreement will give about 500 teachers the chance to unionize.

Election to decide on adjuncts union

Eastern Michigan University announced Friday an agreement was reached with the EMU Federation of Teachers to hold an election for a union that would represent adjunct teaching instructors. In a statement, Jack Kay, EMU provost and executive vice president, said the agreement will give an additional estimated 500 teachers the opportunity to elect a collective bargaining representative

Alumni Awards dinner recognizes eight

The 49th annual Alumni Awards Dinner, honoring eight Eastern Michigan University alumni, took place Saturday at the Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest. The featured alumni awards are chosen after nominations are cast by peers and colleagues, and reviewed by the board of the Alumni Association.

LED signs light up high-traffic areas

Eastern Michigan University is currently installing four new LCD and LED displays in high-traffic locations to communicate emergency and university messages to students, visitors and faculty. Students will also be able to advertise upcoming events relating to their student organizations, sororities and fraternities so students can view these events while walking or driving to class.

Eastern Michigan University announced a comprehensive campaign on April 19 called “Invest. Inspire. The Campaign for Eastern Michigan University.” The first phase of the campaign started in July of 2006.

Pray-Harrold renovations under way

As Pray-Harrold is readied for renovation this spring, Eastern Michigan University staff have been relocating and preparing for a massive change. Administrators conducted extensive research of campus space and dubbed the project the “swing space plan.” The plan includes moving professors and mobilizing campus space to be used for classrooms, offices and storage.

Spring is here, and with spring comes April, Autism Awareness Month. As such, the Autism Collaborative Center is having its first ever “Stronger Together: 5K Run, Walk, Roll for the ACC” on Saturday.

Officer talks gays in military

Retired staff sergeant and LGBT activist Eric Alva spoke in Quirk Theater last Thursday about the U.S. military’s controversial “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
