Student Senate opposes House Bill restricting Bridge Cards

The Eastern Michigan University Student Senate resolved to oppose Michigan House Bill No. 4165, which aims to restrict certain college students from receiving government food assistance, and appointed a new Election Commissioner at a meeting Tuesday.

Eastern Michigan University faculty members with expertise in Middle Eastern Studies and political science held a lively discussion about the conflict in Egypt on Thursday evening in a packed Student Center Ballroom.

Students create pro-life group hoping to expand available info

A group of Eastern Michigan University students in the process of creating a pro-life student organization said although abortion is a controversial issue, it is not talked about enough in the college community. The vice president of the group, EMU junior Christine Robin, said its main goal is to bring awareness to not only college students but individuals in the greater area as well. “Our main goal is to educate life issues that are presenting themselves to people our age,” Robin said.

Emotional health drops in freshmen

The annual survey, “The American Freshman: National Norms for 2010,” has determined the emotional health of college freshmen has dropped to a 25-year-record low in 2010.

Two suspects named in shooting

Detectives have identified two suspects — one of which has been arrested — believed to be involved in an attempted murder shooting that occurred in the 1000 block of McCarthy Court.

Egyptian conflict discussion at EMU

Eastern Michigan University experts will offer insight into the ongoing conflict in Egypt during a campus “teach-in” today in the Student Center. The event will be held in Ballroom A from 6- 8 p.m. The panelists will include individuals with expertise in the Middle East and they will explain exactly what is going on, what it means, and how it affects everyone.



EMU student Nathaniel Winston, a political science major, studies at Halle Library. A recent study has shown that high school seniors have better critical reasoning skills than college sophomores. However, most EMU students and faculty disagree.

A study that was the basis for the book “Academically Adrift” says students in undergraduate universities are not learning what they should be, but many at Eastern Michigan University feel that is not the case in their programs.

Campus: Jan. 26 —Seven textbooks were stolen from a backpack left at 6 p.m. in the Student Center. A subject was cited for littering on public property after the individual dumped a large amount of trash outside of Roosevelt Hall around noon. A subject was cited for disorderly conduct after using a fire extinguisher maliciously.

President Barack Obama used Tuesday night’s State of the Union address as a platform to discuss bipartisanship amongst Democrats and Republicans, education reform, the need for clean energy, job creation and a host of other pressing issues the country is facing.

Panel says students should know rights

Monday, a panel comprised of an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer, a professor and other distinguished guests explained why Eastern Michigan University students should know their rights in a discussion entitled, “Know Your Rights: Student Liberties- Your Rights as a Student and a Citizen.” The group of four panelists addressed an audience in the Student Center on the importance of understanding and sharing the rights they hold as a part of the campus community as well as the nation.
