Loss of rights concerns AAUP

The potential loss of collective bargaining rights for unions in Wisconsin and Ohio has caused worry to spread to other unions around the nation including Eastern Michigan University’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors.

Campus: Feb. 23- A subject admitted to smoking marijuana at 12:09 a.m. in Walton Hall. An intoxicated and suicidal minor was transported to the hospital for treatment at 3:09 a.m.

Peace Corps coming to EMU

The Peace Corps will be coming to Eastern Michigan University this Wednesday to host an information session for students. At the information session, the Peace Corps regional recruiter, Pravin Mallavaram, will be discussing the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps, benefits of Peace Corps service, the application process, how students can become competitive applicants and what life is really like on the ground as a Peace Corps volunteer. Since 1961, over 200,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps Volunteers in 139 host countries.

At 9:37 a.m. Saturday morning after Metro Dispatch received a 911 call, a TCF bank located on Hewitt and Packard in Ypsilanti Township was robbed.

Student Senate keeps president position open

The Eastern Michigan Student Senate narrowly voted against a resolution that would make students who are not in Student Government ineligible to run for the position of student body president or student body vice president.

Local: Feb.18- A home invasion occurred at 10 a.m. in the 2000 block of Brooktree Court. The suspect kicked open the front door to gain entry.


Ken Hillis, above, is an employee at Ypsi-Arbor Lanes on Washtenaw Avenue. “It’s sad,” he said. “This place, with investment and care, could become a great center in Ypsi as it has been.” Ypsi-Abor Lanes will close in May.

Ypsi-Arbor bowling alley to close

Due to recent financial hardships, Ypsi-Arbor Lanes bowling alley, located on Washtenaw Avenue, will close its doors for good May 1 after being open for 40 years.

Campus: Feb.16- A minor in possession of alcohol was cited at 4:48 a.m. and sent to the hospital. Items were taken from an unattended backpack at the Convocation Center at 6:07 p.m. Feb.

Obama's fiscal ideas concern students

After President Barack Obama unveiled his $3.7 trillion Fiscal Year 2012 budget Monday, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan discussed how education will be affected in a call with reporters. A large portion of the budget — $77.4 billion — will be allocated to education, Duncan said. “The president revealed a budget plan that makes deep cuts,” Duncan said. Duncan said his department has seen a “historic” increase in demand for Pell Grants over the last two years, and the program is facing a $20 billion deficit by the end of 2012.

A panel of experts examined President Barack Obama’s performance thus far in a discussion entitled, “The Obama Legacy: A Critical Assessment,” last Wednesday in the Student Center Ballroom.

Ward counseling case moves to higher court

The American Civil Liberties Union in collaboration with the ACLU of Michigan, filed a court brief Friday supporting Eastern Michigan’s right to remove Julea Ward, a former graduate student, from its counseling program because she refused to counsel a homosexual client.

Sept.24 —A subject was found intoxicated near Buell Hall’s parking meters and was transported by the Huron Valley ambulance to the hospital at 2:35 a.m. An underage subject was cited for minor in possession in Best Hall at 12:59 a.m. Sept.
