'Reimagining Detroit' author visits campus, discusses book

On Tuesday in the Halle Library Auditorium, John Gallagher discussed and signed copies of his book “Reimagining Detroit” in which he addresses some of the most complicated issues facing Detroit and offers some ideas on what the city might become in the near future.


	Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Virg Bernero, visted campus Monday. The meeting included his take on higher education, the economy and environment.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero stressed his main goal, if elected, will be getting people back to work in Michigan when he visited Eastern Michigan University on Monday as part of his campaign. “I’m going to be fighting for working people,” Bernero said.

Woman killed in Ecorse crash

A 32-year-old woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a traffic crash involving five vehicles on Ecorse Road at Harris Road in Ypsilanti Township at 4:40 p.m.

Marcus Engel, a national speaker, visited Eastern Michigan University on Tuesday to talk about experiences that changed his life forever. Engel was in a car accident during his freshman year of college and during his road to recovery, he gained a new positive perspective on life.

A panel featuring several distinguished members discussed race and sexuality in the Student Center on Tuesday. Included in the panel were Dr. Dwight McBride, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of African American studies and gender and women’s studies at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Career fair brings job opportunities to EMU

Students packed and scurried to the Student Center Ballroom in hopes of obtaining an internship or job with one of more than 30 companies that represented the Diversity Career Fair that took place last Thursday. This was the sixth year of the Diversity Career Fair hosted by the University of Advising and Career Development Center.

EMU org SAGA aims to defeat homophobia in sports

It’s common for homophobia to be overlooked in the world of sports, but such actions were the inspiration for Eastern Michigan University’s Student Alliance for Gay Athletes (and Allies). “A friend was at a team party where he was being harassed and verbally abused and we didn’t want anyone else to go through that,” said Maggie Manville, co-founder of SAGA.

Ypsilanti police seek more information on rape of woman just off campus

A woman was raped last Thursday at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Cornell Street according to an informational release from the Eastern Michigan University Police Department. The woman was not an EMU student. She was getting out of her vehicle when a group of males pulled up in a four-door black Kia Soul.

Oct. 20 A burglary took place in the 100 block of Russell Boulevard. Deputies said a suspect kicked in the front door of the residence to gain entry around 7 p.m.

New study abroad program to focus on Holocaust study

Professors Carla Damiano and Marty Shichtman hosted the program “Representing the Holocaust: An EMU Study Abroad Opportunity” Tuesday evening in the Downing Hall lounge, which gives students the opportunity to visit a number of European cities.

Michigan gubernatorial candidates address issues

Democratic nominee Virg Bernero and Republican counterpart Rick Snyder stated their stances Sunday on various issues, including the current state of the Michigan and job loss and creation during their only scheduled gubernatorial debate.

Questionable water quality in Great Lakes

This past Wednesday in room 247 in McKenny Union, Joan Rose from Michigan State University spoke to an audience of approximately 30 students on whether individuals should be concerned with the state of our water.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
