Student Senate keeps president position open

The Eastern Michigan Student Senate narrowly voted against a resolution that would make students who are not in Student Government ineligible to run for the position of student body president or student body vice president.

Local: Feb.18- A home invasion occurred at 10 a.m. in the 2000 block of Brooktree Court. The suspect kicked open the front door to gain entry.

Ken Hillis, above, is an employee at Ypsi-Arbor Lanes on Washtenaw Avenue. “It’s sad,” he said. “This place, with investment and care, could become a great center in Ypsi as it has been.” Ypsi-Abor Lanes will close in May.

Ypsi-Arbor bowling alley to close

Due to recent financial hardships, Ypsi-Arbor Lanes bowling alley, located on Washtenaw Avenue, will close its doors for good May 1 after being open for 40 years.

Campus: Feb.16- A minor in possession of alcohol was cited at 4:48 a.m. and sent to the hospital. Items were taken from an unattended backpack at the Convocation Center at 6:07 p.m. Feb.

Obama's fiscal ideas concern students

After President Barack Obama unveiled his $3.7 trillion Fiscal Year 2012 budget Monday, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan discussed how education will be affected in a call with reporters. A large portion of the budget — $77.4 billion — will be allocated to education, Duncan said. “The president revealed a budget plan that makes deep cuts,” Duncan said. Duncan said his department has seen a “historic” increase in demand for Pell Grants over the last two years, and the program is facing a $20 billion deficit by the end of 2012.

Ward counseling case moves to higher court

The American Civil Liberties Union in collaboration with the ACLU of Michigan, filed a court brief Friday supporting Eastern Michigan’s right to remove Julea Ward, a former graduate student, from its counseling program because she refused to counsel a homosexual client.

Sept.24 —A subject was found intoxicated near Buell Hall’s parking meters and was transported by the Huron Valley ambulance to the hospital at 2:35 a.m. An underage subject was cited for minor in possession in Best Hall at 12:59 a.m. Sept.

Former Director of Political Action Sabrina Ford’s firing from the Student Government Executive Board was upheld at a Judicial Committee of Appeals Tuesday night following a Student Senate meeting.

Student Senate opposes House Bill restricting Bridge Cards

The Eastern Michigan University Student Senate resolved to oppose Michigan House Bill No. 4165, which aims to restrict certain college students from receiving government food assistance, and appointed a new Election Commissioner at a meeting Tuesday.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
