Education professor earns award

·

An Eastern Michigan University professor in teacher education in the College of Education was selected as an outstanding advising award winner by the profession’s national association. Linda Lewis-White was honored by the National Academic Advising Association as part of the organization’s annual awards. The association has more than 10,000 members and since 1983, the NACADA has honored individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. The award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated academic advising of students or exceptional administration of academic advising.

Campus: May 3- At 1:56 a.m., a subject driving with no headlights was arrested for operating while impaired on Ballard Street and Washtenaw Avenue.

EMU discusses cutting from sports, raising tuition

In the eighth forum in a series of budget forums at Eastern Michigan University since 2009, EMU officials spoke Wednesday about Eastern’s budget for the 2012 fiscal year, including raises in board and tuition as well as possible budget cuts. John Lumm, chief financial officer and treasurer of the Board of Regents, said the university is also examining what they describe as business improvement.

Gas prices affect Eastern student, faculty commutes

Students, staff and faculty members of Eastern Michigan University don’t always share the same concerns about budgeting resources, but with gasoline prices rising over $4 per gallon that are expected to continue rising through the summer, all segments of the EMU community face the same question: How can someone afford paying more for something affecting so many aspects of life?






	Eastern student Shannon Hulswit learned her childrens’ information had been stolen during the recent information theft by two former student employees after trying to file her 2010 taxes.

Thieves steal students' info

A victim of the March 9 data security breach shared her experience with The Eastern Echo and described how her life has been in the aftermath of her family’s personal information being illegally obtained by former student employees in an office responsible for handling pertinent information such as security numbers and tax information.

Provost to evaluate programs

The Office of the Provost, in consultation with Eastern Michigan University deans, has compiled a list of several academic programs to be reviewed and evaluated for growth, consolidation, and in some cases, phasing out.

Campus: April 7- At 12:10 a.m. subject was found in possession of marijuana in Phelps Hall. A subject was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail for obstructing a police warrant out of the EMU Police Department at 1:03 a.m.

EMU to partake in prison exchange program

For the first time, Eastern Michigan University students have the opportunity to participate in a program allowing them to take part in the Inside Out prison exchange program. It is a national program bringing higher education into prisons across the nation.





Thomas Sugrue, a professor of history and sociology at  the University of Pennsylvania, gave the keynote address Friday.

'Conversations on Race' conference held at EMU

Students and staff were challenged to engage in dialogue with one another at the conference entitled “Conversations on Race” held in the Student Center on Friday. The conference began with a panel discussion moderated by Eastern Michigan University professor Heather Neff.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
