Part-time lecturers fight for change

This week, members of the bargaining team from Eastern Michigan University’s Federation of Teachers (Local 9102) will have the chance to vote for the ratification of the first contract between the university and part-time lecturers. The ratification vote took place from 9 a.m.

Ramsey new English head

In July, Eastern Michigan University named Mary Ramsey as head of the English Department. Originally from Oklahoma, Ramsey had done a fair share of traveling and schooling before settling on EMU. She acquired her B.A.

Eastern Michigan University students are split in their opinions on the newly reopened and remodeled classroom building, Pray-Harrold. While some believe letting students into the building with ongoing construction is a distraction, others believe the grand reopening saved students from another year of taking classes in dorm halls and other designated swing spaces around campus. Junior Brittney Mackie said she “expected more,” since the building was closed for two semesters.

The lack of jobs and subsequent loss of workers in Michigan is causing a circular dilemma with far-reaching consequences throughout the state. With the loss of jobs, unemployment rises; with the loss of tax dollars, budget cuts are made; with the loss of families, less students are enrolled in schools; and with less students enrolled, there’s less need for teachers and schools. EMU housing sees increase for fall '11

According to a weekly report from Eastern Michigan University’s Housing Department, the number of students living in the residence halls has increased by almost ten percent — from 3,073 to 3,314 — since Fall 2010.

Campus: Aug. 30- Money was taken from a purse at 11:08 a.m. from the Village Building E. Aug. 31- A truck window was smashed around midnight in Rynerson Lot. Doughnuts were stolen at 11:08 a.m.


	After a long trip from New York, an I-beam from the World Trade Center’s south tower will be placed on Eastern Michigan University’s campus. The beam will be set as a memorial before the tenth anniversary of the attacks arrives.

Campus: Aug. 26 – Two suspects were issued trespassing citations at 4:08 p.m. in Boone Hall. Aug.

EMU campus switches bank

Chase Bank will open a branch in Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center in a space previously housed by TCF Bank. A release sent out by the bank said students can expect to see bankers moved in completely by mid – October. The branch will have two teller windows, an ATM, lobby workstations for personal bankers and two customer conference rooms, according to the release. The bank plans to install five walk-up ATMs on campus including one at the new branch and on the second floor in the Student Center, one in Pray-Harrold, one in the Eastern Eateries and one in the REC-IM building.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
