Faiths discuss violence

Eastern Michigan University’s Center for Multicultural Affairs teamed with Hillel at EMU, the Holy Trinity Student Parrish and the Muslim Student Association last Wednesday to present “Thou Shall Not: an Interfaith Discussion.” The event sought to answer the question, “Is religion inherently violent?” Heather Neff, an EMU English language and literature professor, moderated the discussion, which was led by six panelists representing the three major Abrahamic faiths: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Author gives talk about Jews in baseball

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center Auditorium hosted Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times sports columnist Ira Berkow to talk about the documentary entitled “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story,” for which he wrote the screenplay. According to English professor Marty Schictman, who introduced Berkow at the beginning of the evening with an EMU baseball cap and T-shirt, nearly 200 people, in addition to the entire EMU baseball team attended the speech.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced in a conference call yesterday that data illustrating the number of young adults who have health insurance has increased by 3.5 percent — nearly 1 million individuals — compared to a year ago.

Student loans defaulting

Federal student loan defaults increased dramatically last year as borrowers continued to struggle to repay their loans in a tough economy, said James Kvaal, U.S.


Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
