Pell Grant eligibility rules changing in '12

In what has been called a “tremendous loss” to students not only at Eastern Michigan University but institutions around the country, EMU Financial Aid Director Cynthia Van Pelt said students who were full-time during fall and winter semesters will no longer be eligible for Pell Grants during the upcoming summer semester. “It’s a big loss for us and really for every school and all of our students that are Pell eligible,” Van Pelt said.

EMU Halle Library repairs start

The repair process is underway at Halle Library after it was discovered that a clamp supporting a water return pipe had broken loose causing the pipe to come crashing down through the ground floor ceiling, triggering the sprinkler system in the process.

EMU Pres. Susan Martin to accept distinguished award

The Michigan Business & Professional Association has announced that EMU President Susan Martin will be awarded the distinguished leadership award in the area of education at the association’s annual Women and Leadership in Workplace Conference. According to Jennifer Kluge, President of the MBPA, the goal of the award is, “Basically successful women inspiring other women to be successful.” Martin is EMU’s first female president.

Campus: Jan. 19 — A student was found in possession of cannabis paraphernalia at 7:20 p.m. in Wise Hall.

Students need to be more aware of alternatives to student loans

Michigan has the 11th-highest student debt load in the country. In 2010, the average student with a bachelor’s degree graduated with $25,675 debt from student loans. In the 2009-10 academic year, the annual amount of loans taken out by college students reached $1.8 billion, a 49 percent increase from 2007.


Pipe damages Halle Library

Halle Library was closed for most of Monday and all of Tuesday after a water return pipe broke from its supports and fell from the basement ceiling, triggering the sprinkler system on its way down.


Keynote calls for efficacy

Despite Monday’s march against Governor Snyder’s Public Act 4 being organized several miles from Eastern Michigan University’s campus, the anxieties for the economic situation at local, state and federal levels could be felt on campus.

A red helicopter hovered low overhead, and police officers were at every intersection, as over 800 protestors, armed with signs and microphones, marched from Parker Mill Park to Governor Snyder’s home on a windy and overcast Martin Luther King, Jr.

The winter semester has begun, and, as seniors begin to receive their audits back, many are surprised to see they don’t have enough LBC credits to graduate.

Sexual assault on EMU campus

A safety notice was issued by the EMU Police Department at 1:44 p.m. Wednesday informing the Eastern community that a female student was sexually assaulted at 7:40 p.m.

Campus: Jan. 12 – An unattended purse was stolen between 10:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. in Ford Hall. An unattended black cell phone was stolen between 4:30 p.m.

Be aware of human trafficking

On Monday, Jan. 9, the Women’s Resource Center kicked off Human Trafficking Awareness Month with an informative panel on the issue. Reverend Bonita Laudeman, Danielle Hodgson and Special Agent with Homeland Security Investigations, Cara Rose, made up the panelists who discussed the dangers of human trafficking and what can be done to stop it.
