Concern for next year's contracts

Early this semester the tenure track faculty at Central Michigan University went on strike. This came after months of unsuccessful negotiations with the university to draft a new contract.

2011 is just part of the big picture

A lot happened this year. A gunman in Tucson, an act of God in the Pacific Rim, a single moment of defiance in Tunisia sparked a region wide uprising. A legend of innovation died, a legacy in Penn State College crumbled, political battles raged. An out-of-control actor started “winning,” a pair of 20-somethings tied the knot across the pond and a mastermind of terror met his maker. So much happened in 2011, yet oftentimes it felt like very little.

Rec center to benefit county

The long-empty 38-acre Water Street site on Michigan Avenue just east of central Ypsilanti might become the site of a public recreation center if the Ypsilanti City Council takes up a proposal from Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Department.

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced Oct. 19 a new online service —ExpressSOS.com. Since its release, the no-wait, online expansion of the Secretary of State has provided customer convenience as well as enabling employees to better serve visitors at the local branch offices.

Pothole problems plague Ypsilanti

Residents in Ypsilanti are spending more money on maintaining their vehicles due to major potholes and the city’s budget for road maintenance. According to Mayor Paul Schreiber in a letter addressed to the residents of Ypsilanti, the city is at a fiscal crossroad and must replace lost tax revenues to survive.

Campus: Dec. 1 – At 12:11 a.m. a flyer was found burnt on a wall in Best Hall. Information was found that indicated credit card fraud at approximately 12:30 p.m.

EMU fees went up, will go up

The school year opened with across-the-board hikes on most fees across campus as state funding for Eastern Michigan University dwindles. For the average undergrad taking 30 credits a year this means a $306 annual increase in tuition and mandatory fees – about $10.20 more per credit hour.

A class assignment to change a small part of the world led Abbey Mattson to become involved with The Water Project, a non-profit organization with a mission to bring healthy water sources to people in lesser developed countries.



EMU responds to Kilpatrick

Despite the outcry against Kwame Kilpatrick’s invitation to speak at EMU, there were hundreds of people waiting in line to hear him speak Tuesday night.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
