WEMU 89.1 FM, the public radio station broadcasting from Eastern Michigan University, has voluntarily cut its reliance on EMU‘s general fund by $50,000 this year, with more cuts to follow.

Five-year transit program approved

Ypsilanti City Council member Peter Murdock described the four-party agreement for a county-wide transit plan as “the only way Ypsilanti will have public transportation in the future.” City Council approved the four-party agreement, among Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County and the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority at its June 5 meeting.

Professor Tew named new director of EMU's CSEHR

Eastern Michigan University’s Center for the Study of Equality and Human Rights, whose mission statement is the advancement and promotion of equality and human rights with a primary focus on eliminating homophobia, appointed EMU Professor of communication Michael Tew as the center’s new director, said the center’s current Director Dennis Patrick.

EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY – Student Government is now hiring for the 2012-13 school year. In order to be considered, an applicant must be an EMU student for the entire 2012-13 academic year, with good academic and judicial standing.

CAMPUS May 20 – A glass door was smashed out on West Cross Street at 10:56 p.m. May 21 – A juvenile was arrested after stealing a bike from the Buell Hall parking lot at 7:14 a.m. An unattended purse was reported stolen in Pray-Harrold at 1:23 p.m. A male was arrested for an EMU bench warrant at 1:28 p.m.


Proposed changes to charter involve weed consumption

Antonio Cosme, an Eastern Michigan University graduate who heads the Committee for a Safer Ypsilanti, said at a press conference at EMU May 23 that his group will promote an amendment to the Ypsilanti city charter to make “possession of small amounts of cannabis the lowest law enforcement priority.” Charles Ream of the Coalition for a Safer Michigan, another group supporting and promoting the proposed amendment, said it offers students a chance to affect public policy. “This is not about marijuana,” Ream said.

May 14 – A subject was driving the wrong way on a one-way street, and was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol at 1:57 a.m.




Heart Walk raises funds for research

On Saturday, May 19, about 120 Eastern Michigan University faculty, staff, students and their families, including university President Susan Martin, gathered at Washtenaw Community College for the annual Ann Arbor American Heart Association Heart Walk.

Salmonella found, pet food recalled

LANSING- On April 2, a sample collected as part of routine retail animal feed surveillance by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Pesticide and Plant Pest Management division found Salmonella Infantis in a sample collected from an intact package of Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice Formula for Adult Dogs.



Incentive given to 'Live Ypsi'

As an incentive for Eastern Michigan University employees to move to Ypsilanti, a new program called Live Ypsi will offer employees between $5,000 and $10,000 in forgivable loans toward the purchase of a home in the city.
