John Phillips worked for the Pittsfield Police Department for 30 years and served as Director of Public Safety, which is the same as Chief of Police, for the last 10 of those years. “They didn’t have the title of Chief at the time,” Phillips said.

SESI conference features locals reinventing Michigan

The fifteenth annual SESI Midwestern Regional Entrepreneurship Conference was held in the EMU Student Center on Friday. The conference was presented by the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization and was focused on reinventing Michigan, utilizing the entrepreneurial spirit. In 2009 EMU received $200,000 from the estate of Catherin Sesi to endow the annual conference. The conference featured speakers from a variety of businesses and organizations, broken down into two breakout sessions with a keynote presentation during breakfast and another during lunch. The breakfast keynote speaker was Amy Cell from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The first breakout session featured Chalres Senteio, an entrepreneur in health care and consulting; Gauri Thergonkar from Zingtrain; and Pat Muldoon, vice president of product development engineering for Venchurs Vehicle Systems. The second session included Zach Wigal, founder of Gamers Outreach Foundation; Kentaro Ray, founder of Kentaro SEO Marketing; and Bilal Saeed and Tim Adkins, founders of Pakmode Media and Marketing. The lunch keynote was delivered by Mike Lorenc, Google manager of Dedicated Client Services.

SEPE active again at EMU

A group of students are reviving the inactive campus chapter of Students for an Ethical and Participatory Education. John Dellapelle, a junior studying political science at EMU, said the organization focuses on increasing student involvement in campus governance.


Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
