Funding limits force Halle to cut

Faculty and students alike are growing concerned about Halle Library. The library’s collection budget receives only $120 for each EMU student, as opposed to the $200 per student average that is given by other universities to their libraries.

State budget cuts challenge colleges

When ranking states by the amount of funding for higher education, Michigan ranks 49 out of 50. In other words, 48 states give more money to colleges and universities than Michigan does. State budget cuts are one of the biggest challenges public universities face today.

Locker rooms security to get increase soon

A recent break-in and attempted larceny in the Warner pool locker rooms has angered members of the Eastern Michigan University chapter of the American Association of University Professors, who have been lobbying for increased security in the locker rooms since May 2011.

Gas leak stops drilling of wells near EMU COB

Last week, the Ypsilanti City Council passed an ordinance forbidding anyone to drill for drinking water near Eastern Michigan University’s College of Business; closing the book on a 1980s gas leak on the property where the College of Business now stands.

30 percent growth in career planning services

Eastern Michigan University students are paying more attention to making a career plan now than they were before 2008, according to Sarah Kersey Otto, director of Career Development and Outreach in the Advising and Career Development Center. Students are making more use of both academic advising and career development services since the merger of the two functions in the summer of 2010, Otto said.

Feminists of color fight for equality

Feminists are fighting for a united cause, but still find divisions in their community due to racial issues according to Brittney Cooper, a co-founder of Crunk Feministic Collective, Monday night in the Eastern Michigan University Student Center. “You cannot build a feminist world that is racist,” Cooper, who is also an assistant professor at the University of Alabama, said.

Academic, event calendars combine online

Keeping track of the different professional, social and creative events on Eastern Michigan University’s campus became possible when a new calendar went online a couple of weeks ago. Creators Darcy Gifford of the Division of Communications and Vicki Patton of the Student Leader Group and Disability Resource Center hope to make it easier for students and faculty to view the academic and event calendars simultaneously. “Instead of having several different calendars on my.emich, we combined them all to view everything at once,” Patton said.

Convenience store prices competively priced?

A 12.25 ounce box of Honey Nut Cheerios costs $3.29 at Meijer. The same box of cereal costs $8.59 at Crossroads Marketplace. Many other products at Eastern Michigan University’s convenience stores are similarly marked up.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
