Former EMU President John W. Porter dies at age 80

Porter, who died June 27, served as Eastern Michigan University’s 17th president from 1979-89 and was known for establishing the College of Technology, record enrollment growth, strengthening and adding academic programs, building the Rec/IM facility and creating the College of Business in downtown Ypsilanti.

The article “Rally supports faculty contract negotiations,” in the June 12 edition of The Eastern Echo, failed to mention the rally took place on June 5 and Anita Amrhein’s name was misspelled as “Amhreim.” Amrhein also said she was misquoted as saying, “Bargaining has been fair and in good faith,” when it should have read, “We are currently bargaining in good faith.” The article “New program in review by EMU Board of Regents,” in the June 26 issue of The Eastern Echo, incorrectly listed Michigan State University as having a physicians assistant program when it should have listed Central Michigan University, which does have a PA program.

Board approves new budget

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents adopted a 2012-13 budget June 19 that includes a general fund operating budget of $290.6 million, an auxiliary activities operating budget of $42.1 million and a capital budget of $21.7 million. The board also received a three year capital plan.

Area speed limits to change

The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to change the speed limits on state trunk lines in the city of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township and Pittsfield Township.

EMU tuition to increase in fall

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents approved a 3.95 percent increase in tuition and fees beginning fall 2012 during the June 19 regular meeting at which the 2012-13 budget was adopted.

Nine students from Eastern Michigan University’s class of 2013 presented their research projects to attendees of the fifth annual McNair Research Colloquium on Friday, June 15 in the Bruce T.

Eastern Michigan University’s 9/11 memorial in Pease Park, located between Pease Auditorium and Cross Street on the southeast end of campus, has inscription written by EMU professor added to steps.

ACC receives $500,000 grant

·

Eastern Michigan University’s Autism Collaboration Center was recently awarded a $500,000 grant from the state of Michigan. The grant was included in next year’s state budget for the Michigan Department of Community Health, which was passed by the Michigan State House and the Senate, but is still waiting to be approved by Governor Rick Snyder.

Fiscal responsibility

WEMU 89.1 FM, the public radio station broadcasting from Eastern Michigan University, has voluntarily cut its reliance on EMU‘s general fund by $50,000 this year, with more cuts to follow.

Five-year transit program approved

·

Ypsilanti City Council member Peter Murdock described the four-party agreement for a county-wide transit plan as “the only way Ypsilanti will have public transportation in the future.” City Council approved the four-party agreement, among Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County and the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority at its June 5 meeting.
