Collective bargaining on this year’s ballot

Michigan residents will be voting whether or not to approve Proposal 2, the so-called Protect Our Jobs amendment, on the Nov. 6 ballot. Proposal 2 would add the right to collectively bargain, for both public and private sector employees, to the state constitution.

EMU’s engineering program now accredited Eastern Michigan University’s mechanical engineering technology program is now accredited – a move that will increase job prospects for its graduates. The Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission, a part of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, has approved accreditation for the bachelor’s degree in the MET program, which is housed in the College of Technology at EMU. In a press release, Wade Tornquist, interim dean of the College of Technology said, “This accreditation ensures our program has met the rigorous standards necessary to produce graduates who are ready to enter their chosen professions.” EMU’s program provides graduates with a technical foundation that mixes the methods, materials, machinery and other resources found in modern industry.

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center Auditorium was filled with about 20 students Oct. 11 for the first and only vice presidential debate between current Vice President Joe Biden and vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan.

Proposal 6 details revealed to students

Eastern Michigan University held the Statewide Ballot Informative Forum Oct. 9 in the Halle Library Auditorium to answer students’ questions and give details on the plans and development of Proposal 6, which if passed would require voters to approve any new bridge or tunnel from Michigan to Canada.

EMU makes exceptions for underage drinkers

Eastern Michigan University has developed a new policy regarding underage drinking in response to a statewide medical amnesty law in effect since June 1 that creates exceptions to Michigan’s Minor in Possession laws. The new law states that a person under 21 years of age who voluntarily seeks medical treatment or accompanies an individual who voluntarily seeks medical treatment for overconsumption of alcohol will be exempt from a violation for the purchase, consumption or possession of alcohol.

Discussion focuses on domestic abuse victims

“No Strings Attached: Barriers to Receiving Help,” held Oct. 3, was an interactive discussion hosted by Eastern Michigan University’s Women’s Resource Center Program Coordinator Jess Klein in the Student Center.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
