Former student, racer to talk at graduation

Howard “Howdy” S. Holmes, a former auto racer and successful CEO, has been announced as the commencement speaker for Eastern Michigan University’s Dec. 16 graduation ceremony. The EMU Board of Regents approved his nomination, and also chose Holmes and Philanthropist Phillip Jenkins to receive honorary degrees, during their board meeting Oct. 30.

DTE partners with 826michigan to help expand tutoring programs

DTE Energy has partnered up with the nonprofit organization 826michigan to help them expand their tutoring programs in Michigan schools. DTE helped the organization expand to Ypsilanti Middle School and recently gave 826Michigan a $100,000 grant to make another tutoring center in Detroit.

Board approves support of 3 charter schools

Board passes financial plan for scholarships

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents authorized a new $38 million financial aid plan at their Oct. 30 meeting. The money will go towards scholarships and awards for current EMU students as well as incoming freshmen.

Obama leads in polls by 0.1 percent

The Real Clear Politics statistics showed nationwide Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will receive 47.3 percent of votes and President Barack Obama will receive 47.4 percent of votes, giving Obama a 0.1 percent lead.

EMU to drive students to polls all day Nov. 6

Eastern Michigan University will be driving students to the polls all day on Election Day Nov. 6. Vans can be found outside the Eastern Eateries Food Court, located between Phelps-Sellers and Walton-Putnam residence halls, and will have signs reading “EMU Rides to the Polls.” Students will need to bring a state-issued ID and their voter registration cards to the polls. Students will vote at Ypsilanti Middle School at 105 N.

President Barack Hussein Obama, 51, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father was from Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. Obama’s parents divorced when he was 2 years old, and he moved to Indonesia shortly after when his mother remarried.

In order to vote at the polls, you must show picture ID or sign an affidavit attesting you are not in possession of identification.

Latest Podcast

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
