EMU hosts job fair

The Michigan Collegiate Job Fair was hosted by Eastern Michigan University Friday at Burton Manor, located at 27777 Schoolcraft Road in Livonia, Mich., where hundreds of graduate students came from various universities across the state to apply for jobs and meet with potential employers.

Undergrads can soon record LBC events with QR codes

By the end of November, Eastern Michigan University undergraduate students will be presented with the opportunity to record their attendance to Learning Beyond the Classroom and other specified events through the code reader quick response system.


Graduates to wear gowns made of recycled bottles

Eastern Michigan University graduates are going green in more ways than one. This December, more than 2,000 graduates will be walking across the stage in the traditional gowns made with a twist: Each gown is made from recycled bottles — 23 to be exact.

SEPE asks EMU to cut ties with Adidas for unfair pay

The Eastern Michigan University student organization Students for an Ethical Participatory Education have demanded that EMU sever its contract with Adidas unless its workers in Indonesia were paid $1.8 million. SEPE delivered a letter to EMU President Susan Martin’s office Oct. 18, but members of the organization said they still have not received a reply.


Troy recalls mayor for radical opinions

Janice Daniels, the mayor of Troy, Mich., was recalled Nov. 6 by a vote of 52 percent. The recall effort was centered around Daniels’ views on gay marriage and her opposition to a transit center.


EMU Board of Regents adds two members

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder announced the appointments of Mary Treder Lang and James “Jim” Webb to the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents on Tuesday. Treder Lang and Webb will replace current board Chairman Roy Wilbanks and immediate past Chairman Tom Sidlik, whose eight-year terms expire at the end of 2012.

Poll shows most countries preferred Obama

When Barack Obama was announced as the president of the U.S. Nov. 6, many countries were relieved. BBC recently conducted a poll to see which U.S. presidential candidate countries around the world wanted to see hold the position, and every country polled except Pakistan preferred Obama by an overwhelming percentage.

Split Congress must work to solve issues

With 53 Democrats, two Independents and 45 Republicans in the Senate, the Democratic Party reigns. While in the House of Representatives, there is a Republican majority with 241 Republicans and 194 Democrats, which leads some Americans to ask, “Will anything get done?”

Yellow ribbons around EMU campus Eastern Michigan University’s student veterans have been honoring Michigan residents who died in Iraq and Afghanistan by placing 223 yellow ribbons on trees around campus. The ribbons list the soldier’s name, city of residence, operation they were involved in and date of death.

EMU ranks 103 of 141 for sexual health ed

Recently, the seventh annual Trojan Report Card of Sexual Health was released, showing that Eastern Michigan University ranks No. 103 out of 141 institutions of higher education that were reviewed. EMU is up 21 spots from last year’s report card, showing an improvement in the area of sexual health knowledge and resource availability.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
