Students discuss allowing marijuana on campuses

The polls have closed and doing so brought a change in the states of Washington and Colorado. These two states have passed laws allowing people who are 21 and older to legally possess a maximum of one ounce of marijuana.

School districts to merge

The City of Ypsilanti can expect big changes in the upcoming year as the school districts of Ypsilanti and Willow Run merge. Many costs are anticipated with the merge.





Ypsilanti man sought for attempted murder of girlfriend

The Eastern Michigan University Department of Public Safety sent out a campus notification Nov. 28 asking EMU students to be on the lookout for Michael Joshua Glenn in connection to an attempted murder, which took place Tuesday evening in the 2300 block of McKinley Road near Hewitt and Packard roads in Ypsilanti Township.

Nov. 15 A purse was stolen at 9:38 a.m. at the Halle Computer Lab. Cans were reported stolen from a donation bin at 10:31 a.m. at Mark Jefferson. The theft occurred between 10:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 8:30 a.m. Nov. 15.

Man found dead on Ypsi railroad tracks

Ypsilanti railroad workers walking their routine patrol found a dead body at 9:25 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. The man was hit and killed by a passing train near Forest Avenue.

Prosecutor for accused I-96 shooter announced Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings, Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse and Shiawassee County Prosecutor Randy Colbry announced Nov. 27 that the Attorney General’s Criminal Division will lead the prosecution of Raulie Casteel for crimes allegedly committed in the three counties.

Parties will need to reach agreement on fiscal cliff

With a fiscal cliff looming over the American people, the country is left to wonder what is awaiting its citizens in the coming year. A fiscal cliff will take place in the United States if certain laws remain intact that can result in increased taxes, spending cuts and a parallel decrease in the budget deficit.

Elementary students look forward to Winter Wishlists

The Eastern Michigan University Residence Hall Association is currently hosting Winter Wishlist, a program where students give back to students. EMU students are given the opportunity to donate gifts to elementary school students enrolled at New Beginnings Academy in Ypsilanti.


Diane Hathaway makes ‘bold’ decision in office

A complaint was recently filed against Michigan Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway regarding her Florida residence. Federal authorities are investigating the claim that Hathaway and her husband Michael Kingsley transferred ownership of their home in Windermere, Fla. to their daughter just before a short sale of their home in Michigan. Therefore, Hathaway is accused of defrauding a bank and hiding assets in order to justify a short sale.

Israel, Gaza cease fire

Israel and Gaza came to a ceasefire agreement Wednesday after over a week of continuous violence. The incident started when Israel issued an airstrike and killed Hamas military leader Ahmed Jabari, the BBC reported Nov. 14.

Detroit Board removes EAA

·

The Detroit Board of Education voted to withdraw from its Education Achievement Authority contract with Eastern Michigan University Nov. 13.


Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
