Professor Catarino leaves EMU

Eastern Michigan University faculty member Jeremy Catarino is leaving EMU after working as a professor for the Simulation Animation and Gaming program.

MI is 24th state adopting RTW law

Michigan has been the focus of headlines since early Tuesday evening as it became the 24th state to enact right-to-work laws, when Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed two bills allowing workers the choice of paying for union dues.

Eastern considers rebates on tuition

In an effort to encourage improved graduation rates, Eastern Michigan University’s student government is supporting a new tuition rebate incentive. The program, conceived by Student Body President Matthew Norfleet and Vice President Desmond Miller, will award students who meet the necessary requirements a rebate of any tuition increases over the course of their college career.


	Julia Niswender was found dead in her apartment Dec. 11. The 23-year-old’s cause of death was found to be asphyxiation associated with drowning.

EMU student found dead

Eastern Michigan University student Julia Catherine Niswender, 23, was found dead Tuesday night in her apartment in the Peninsular Place apartment complex, located at 1000 N. Huron River Drive in Ypsilanti. Police are treating the death as an apparent homicide.

Student artist wins esteemed theater award Victoria “Tori” Tomalia has won the Don and Elizabeth Doyle Fellowship Special Recognition Award for her offerings to theater for youth. Tomalia is an Eastern Michigan University graduate student studying applied drama and theatre for the young.



Service held for John Porter

A memorial service was held for Eastern Michigan University’s 17th president, John W. Porter, Friday in the Student Center ballroom. The service included music, a video, slideshows and personal recollections from a variety of speakers.

Conference helps students build brand

Social media no longer falls under the terms “procrastination” and “time wasting,” but instead “building your brand” and “working on your resume.” According to the Student Development Conference, hosted Friday at Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center, social media platforms are career builders.


Regents talk student success, mental health

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents met Thursday in Welch Hall to discuss several issues, including the establishment of student success metrics, the university’s new physician’s assistant program and mental health awareness on campus.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder expressed his desire Nov. 28 to get the environment and natural resources in good shape for future generations so Michigan will be “a place our kids will want to live, work and play.”

The National Council on Teacher Quality, an advocacy and policy group, listed Eastern Michigan University as one of the schools that has not handed over documents for a study regarding teacher preparation.

Fake money used at EMU

This semester alone, Lt. Dan Karrick and Chief Bob Heighes of the Eastern Michigan University Police Department have dealt with six instances of fraudulent money being used around campus.


School bus theft suspect has mental illness history

Evidence showed Josiah Curtis, who was arrested Thanksgiving morning for allegedly stealing a school bus to drive to Detroit and start a rapping career there, was mentally ill and had not been taking his medication prior to the theft.

Gov. Snyder proposes trail

In a major environmental address Wednesday, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder proposed a 599 mile hiking and biking trail from Belle Isle in Detroit to the Wisconsin border in the Upper Peninsula.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
