Government launches programs to help loan debt

In an effort to help graduating students better understand their loan debt and stay on track for repayment, the U.S. Department of Education launched two new features on its StudentLoans.gov website: A complete counseling webpage and a new repayment estimator that lets borrowers compare what their monthly payment amounts would likely be across the seven repayment plan options.


	The Ypsilanti club will hold the event Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. The fundraiser is part of a global campaign to fight maternal and neonatal tetanus, which kills one baby every nine minutes.

Kiwanis Club to host Pancake Breakfast

The Kiwanis Club of Ypsilanti will host its annual Pancake Breakfast Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Ypsilanti, located at 209 Washtenaw Ave., to raise funds for The Eliminate Project campaign.

Dine to Donate for ALS

Eastern Michigan University seniors Carolynn Cribley and Monica Christensen hosted Dine to Donate at Aubree’s Pizzeria & Grill in Ypsilanti, located at 39 E. Cross St., where they raised about $71 for the Michigan Chapter of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.

Genocide Awareness Project visits EMU

Eastern Michigan University students received a chance to glimpse the Genocide Awareness Project, a traveling photo exhibit that compares abortion to the horrors of genocide, outside King Hall and the Marshall Building Thursday and Friday.


Niswender was drowned

Details have emerged in the Niswender case as family members have told the Monroe Evening News that Julia Niswender, 23, was drowned in her bathtub.

Eastern Michigan University’s Muslim Student Association gathered 60 students for Crossroads, a panel discussion from speakers Amin Abdush Shakur, Joliba Honzaki, Joseph Swager and Khadija Umm Uthman. The four spoke about what encouraged them to convert to Islam.

Board approves graduation speakers

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents has approved TV producer Scott Reynolds and philanthropist Robert Holman Jr. as speakers for this year’s April 28 commencement ceremony at the Convocation Center, located at 799 N. Hewitt Road in Ypsilanti.




	Ida Mollett, president of the campus Student Veterans Association, said it’s important for student veterans to have a plan.

Programs to help student veterans available at EMU

Many veterans agree the transition from military service to student life is a drastic change, and Eastern Michigan University has programs available to assist student veterans with their unique needs. EMU senior Chris Parker is an Iraq veteran who served as an infantry Marine from 2005-09.

March 30 A male subject was charged for public drunkenness at the intersection of North Normal Street and Washtenaw Avenue at 3:44 p.m. A subject was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled narcotic at the intersection of North Hamilton Street and Washtenaw Avenue at 7:03 p.m.
