Gun control: Diversity in opinions on campus

In the aftermath of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. that resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including 20 children, national attention has turned to gun control. At Eastern Michigan University, students have mixed beliefs on gun control.

Hundreds of high school students arrived at Eastern Michigan University Thursday and Friday for Michigan’s Distributive Education Clubs of America’s fourth and fifth district competitions.


Law to prevent sexual abuse

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder recently passed a bill to help protect children from sexual abuse. The bill was named for Erin Merryn, a 27-year-old from Schaumburg, Ill., who was sexually abused as a child.


Governor Snyder signs Erin’s Law, other bills into law

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed 30 new bills into law. One of the bills signed was Erin’s Law, sponsored by state Senators John Proos, Rebekah Warren and Judy Emmons, which allows schools to create programs educating children, staff and families on sexual abuse of children.

Possible suicide at Peninsular Place apartments

Officers from the Ypsilanti Police Department are investigating the death of a Peninsular Place resident as a possible suicide. According to a press release from the YPD, a 21-year-old Ypsilanti woman was found deceased in her apartment in the 900 block of Railroad Street at 4:35 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11.

MI passes law to contain medical marijuana

Michigan lawmakers passed a bill Dec. 14 that requires registered medical marijuana patients to transport their marijuana within a sealed container and in the trunk of their vehicle. If the vehicle does not have a trunk, the marijuana must be stored in a locked container out of reach from the patient.

*No new information released on Niswender death* As investigation into the death of Eastern Michigan University student Julia Niswender continues, the Ypsilanti police have no new information to release to the public.


Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
