Local rehab center to hold event

On Sept. 8, Ann Arbor-based rehabilitation facility Dawn Farm will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with a free event, the Dawn Farm Jamboree, which will include auctions, music from soul and blues band NoteWorthy, hayrides and pony rides. The event is scheduled to be from 1-6 p.m.

Islam debate held on EMU campus

On August 10, a symposium called “Is Islam a Religion of Peace?” was held at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center. The event was sponsored by Ave Maria Radio, a syndicated Catholic radio station based in Ann Arbor. Speakers included Robert Spencer, author and director of anti-Islam blog Jihad Watch, in the featured debate against Shadid Lewis of the Muslim Debate Initiative in the US, and the event concluded with a Mass celebrated by the Rev. Earl A. Boyea, bishop of Lansing.


Ekklesia Fellowship gives out free lunches

The Ekklesia Fellowship Ministries, located at 123 N. Adams St., gave neighbors and strangers a free lunch, cold beverages and gifts on Saturday, June 22, when they held a neighborhood outreach event outside their church.

EMU’s SG recruits its new Executive Board

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Government hired its Executive Board for the 2013-2014 school years, merging the positions of director of political action and director of diversity into that of the new director of social justice position.

EMU’s Findley named state coordinator for Michigan-American Council on Education Women’s Network— Assistant Vice President for Academic Success Partnerships at Eastern Michigan University, Lynette Findley, has been named state coordinator for the Michigan-American Council on Education Women’s Network and will serve two years. Findley earned a doctorate in higher education administration from Michigan State University, a master’s degree in guidance and counseling and a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Michigan. Victorian house doubles as classroom for Eastern Michigan’s grad students— Graduate students in EMU’s historic preservation program are getting experience in a Victorian-era home located in the town of Concord.

EMU committee discusses major topics

Eastern Michigan University’s Educational Committee held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the phasing out of two programs at EMU and to consider the authorization of three charter schools. Associate provost and associate vice president for academic programming and services, Rhonda Longworth presented to the Educational Committee the phasing out of the master of sociology-family specialty program and the phasing out of the minor in Spanish literature. Longworth said the reason for the phasing out of the master of sociology-family specialty program is that it is not sustainable.

Regents approve capital budget

Eastern Michigan University Regents approve capital plan— The EMU Board of Regents approved a capital plan of $9.2 million dollars for the fiscal year 2013-2014. The plan has been approved for upgrades across the EMU campus which includes academic facilities and technology, investments in the new Physician Assistant Program and an increase in enrollment for the College of Health and Human Services. During 2008-2009, and 2012-2013, capital spending reached $220 million, with 10 percent in dining and housing renovations, athletic amenities, campus infrastructure, and safety and security at EMU.

Martin provides a rundown of future plans

Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin and Chief Financial Officer John Lumm presented a Strategic Planning and Budget Forum to provide the campus community with updates about EMU’s finances and investments. Martin provided a rundown of the strategic planning for the last ten years at EMU.

EMU paleontologist wins grant to analyze new species of fossil macroalgae— Eastern Michigan University paleontologist Steven LoDuca and Virginia Tech geobiology professor Shuhai Xiao have been awarded a $160,000 National Science Foundation grant.


Exhibit honors Betty Brown-Chappell

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History, located at 315 E. Warren Ave. in Detroit, opened an exhibit for three days honoring a social worker, activist and Eastern Michigan University professor’s journey from poverty to success, as well as her family’s history spanning four generations.

May 20 A cell phone was reported stolen at Rec/IM from an unlocked locker at 1:39 p.m. A subject was reported for obstructing police and/or fireman at the intersection of Emmet and Ballard streets at 6:49 p.m.

Rackham Hall renovations for Physician Assistant Program at Eastern Michigan University— EMU’s new Physician Assistant Program will transfer to a renovated building on the school’s campus. Rackham Hall is undergoing an interior renovation that seeks to meet the program’s needs.

Eastern Michigan University director of bands, Mary Schneider, to be inducted into American Bandmasters Association— Mary Schneider, associate professor of music and director of bands at EMU will be inducted into the American Bandmasters Association during the organization’s annual convention taking place March 6-8, 2014 in Montgomery, Ala. Schneider is a conductor for EMU’s Wind Symphony.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
