Student senate makes changes

On Tuesday, Eastern Michigan University’s student senate discussed whether it should support the implementation of a student fee of $0.93 for Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority bus passes, to establish an ad hoc Energy and Sustainability Committee for the 2013-2014 year and to remove a section from the bylaws of student government.

Model UN club to go to conference

Eastern Michigan University’s Model United Nations club will be traveling to Chicago in November to attend the American Model United Nations Conference. They will bring two teams to represent Palestine and Guatemala.

The Eastern Michigan University College of Business hosted a business conference on Thursday with some of its most successful alumni. Each alumnus in attendance gave a series of lectures throughout the day about the lessons they have learned in the business world after leaving EMU.

Last Monday, on campus Teresa Gillotti, the city planner of Ypsilanti, presented a draft of the city’s Master Plan to a room of 20. (A very lackluster turnout when you consider the 18,914 stakeholders who attend the school.)

	Student veterans of Eastern Michigan University are invited to help each other find balance among school, life and work during weekly group meetings. The Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting the open discussions at 3 p.m. every Wednesday in the Military and Veterans Resource Center at 401 Pierce Hall.

Student Body President promotes togetherness

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Body President, Desmond Miller, gave a speech on Tuesday in the Student Center to address many initiatives, including family restrooms and renovations to facilities, that the SGA wishes to see come to fruition during the fall semester.


	On Tuesday in front of Pray-Harrold, Students for Life raised awareness on campus regarding Planned Parenthood and educated Eastern Michigan University women on the multiple options for dealing with an unplanned pregnancy.

Alumnus achieves national science teaching award— Eastern Michigan University alumnus and fifth-grade science teacher, Gary Koppelman, received the 2013 Shell Science Teaching Award at a banquet in April of this year. The awards were provided by the Shell Oil Company and the National Science Teachers Association.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
