EMU’s Student Government Public Affairs Committee— Eastern Michigan University’s Student Government Public Affairs Committee held an open session at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in room 104 of the Student Center to discuss the matter of offering in-state tuition to undocumented students.

Nov. 2 Noisy students were found consuming alcohol in Hill Hall at 1:50 a.m. Three pairs of sunglasses and a GPS were reported stolen from an unsecured vehicle in North Campus Lot One at 6:51 p.m. A student in the Dining Commons failed to pay for ice cream at 8:05 p.m. Several students were involved in a physical altercation in Phelps Hall at 9:37 p.m. Two underage subjects were found in possession of alcohol at Village Building C at 10:41 p.m. *Nov.

Faculty honored by Alumni Association

The Eastern Michigan University Alumni Association held its annual teaching excellence awards Thursday. The recipients of the award this year included William Douglas Baker of the Department of English Language and Literature, Cory D. Emal of the Chemistry Department, James P. Sheerin of the Physics and Astronomy Department, Phil Simmons of the Theatre Arts Department, Diana J. Wong of the College of Business, Management Department, and Nancy Caine Harbour of the College of Technology, Paralegal Studies Department.

Speaker informs on restraint, seclusion

Dan Habib’s documentary followed the stories of five special needs students. These students shared their experiences with restraint and seclusion in their respective schools, which left them both physically and psychologically harmed.



	Carmen Logie earned her master’s in social work at EMU.

Alumna analyzes women living with HIV

Eastern Michigan University alumna Carmen Logie was a guest speaker who offered her analysis about the stigmas associated with HIV. The presentation, called “Intersectionality, discrimination and stigma: On Women living with HIV in Ontario, Canada,” was held on Friday afternoon at the Everett L. Marshall building.



Lecturer shares startling stats about poverty

The Honors College’s star lecture series for this year is all about exploring issues around poverty. On Tuesday, philosophy professor Peter Higgins spoke in the Student Center Ballroom about the philosophy side of poverty. The name of the lecture was “Charity, Beneficence, or Justice?” Higgins did a lecture for last year’s star lecture series and came back this year by popular demand.

AMP presents second episode of ‘Clash of the Creators’

The AMP student organization has long connected student artists to opportunities, and allows them an outlet in which to show their talent. “Clash of the Creators” episode 2 was the next in a series of art-focused reality television competitions bringing together student artists to compete in specific challenges.

Bathhouse Reading held in Student Center

On Tuesday the Eastern Michigan University creative writing program held its Bathhouse Reading Series featuring authors Douglas Kearney and Tisa Bryant in the Student Center Auditorium. Bryant’s first readings came from her book “Unexplained Presence,” which is a collection of hybrid essays punctuated by ekphrastic poems.

Speaker discusses growth after traumatic events

On Wednesday in Pray-Harrold, Amis Harbin, an assistant professor in both the philosophy and women and gender studies programs at Oakland University, gave a speech called “The Limits of Post-Traumatic Growth.” In it, she discussed many professional views on the topic as well as her own view.


Julez DeShetler, the host of Scoop on the Scene comes back on the track another week to inform Echo listeners of the events happening around campus during the week of Nov. 9-15.
