EMU’s #GivingTuesday— On Dec. 3, Eastern Michigan University will host a one-day fundraising campaign. According to an article from EMU’s Division of Communications, the campaign will correspond with the national #GivingTuesday movement. This national movement promotes charitable events that support nonprofit organizations.

Students give opinions on new gaming consoles

On Friday, Sony launched its latest gaming console, the PlayStation 4. Sales were so high over the weekend that Sony’s platform for online gaming and selling game downloads, the PlayStation Network, had network issues due to high traffic on launch day.

Crime Stoppers of Mich. looking for murder leads

After two murders within the past year in close proximity of Eastern Michigan University, Crime Stoppers of Michigan is urging people to speak up with any information that can lead to the arrests of those responsible for the homicides of EMU students Julia Niswender and Demarius Reed.

Veterans share their stories

Student veterans gathered for a meet-and-greet Thursday afternoon at the Student Center and took advantage of the chance to share their stories about drill sergeants, boot camp, deployment, bad chow, bad pay and many other facets of military life.

Nov. 9 Officers cited a Westview Apartment resident for a noise complaint at 3:09 a.m. An intoxicated subject in the Rynearson Parking Lot fell and hit his head at 5:53 p.m. A student was found unconscious in Wise Hall from a heroin overdose at 7:17 p.m.

Explore Eastern— High school and transfer students can apply for admission at Eastern Michigan University, free of charge, at the Explore Eastern Open House. The event is on Saturday, Nov. 23 and begins at the Student Center on campus. It is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

BLACK screens documentary ‘Central Park 5’

“The purpose of this screening is to highlight Central Park 5 and to give background to the Eastern student community,” Michael Wood, junior and secretary of BLACK said. “Because I’m pretty sure that [they] aren’t aware of the Central Park 5.”

International Experience Forum held on Thursday

The Department of World Languages and Office of International Initiatives hosted an International Experience Forum at the Student Center on Thursday that discussed the Fulbright Scholarship and other opportunities to study abroad.


Exhibit shows words as art

The opening reception of “Non-Text”, was held in the Eastern Michigan University Gallery on Tuesday evening. The exhibit features pieces that use text, typography and handwriting to create visual works of art.

The fair represented EMU Academic Programs Abroad, the Department of World Languages, German Club, Hansori, the Indian Student Organization, the International Students Association, the Latino Student Association, the Japanese Student Association, the Office of International Students, the Saudi Student Association and the Spanish Club.

Nov. 2 Noisy students were found consuming alcohol in Hill Hall at 1:50 a.m. Three pairs of sunglasses and a GPS were reported stolen from an unsecured vehicle in North Campus Lot One at 6:51 p.m. A student in the Dining Commons failed to pay for ice cream at 8:05 p.m. Several students were involved in a physical altercation in Phelps Hall at 9:37 p.m. Two underage subjects were found in possession of alcohol at Village Building C at 10:41 p.m. *Nov.

Faculty honored by Alumni Association

The Eastern Michigan University Alumni Association held its annual teaching excellence awards Thursday. The recipients of the award this year included William Douglas Baker of the Department of English Language and Literature, Cory D. Emal of the Chemistry Department, James P. Sheerin of the Physics and Astronomy Department, Phil Simmons of the Theatre Arts Department, Diana J. Wong of the College of Business, Management Department, and Nancy Caine Harbour of the College of Technology, Paralegal Studies Department.

Speaker informs on restraint, seclusion

Dan Habib’s documentary followed the stories of five special needs students. These students shared their experiences with restraint and seclusion in their respective schools, which left them both physically and psychologically harmed.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
