Self Defense Training— A free self defense training class will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 7-9 p.m. in room 208 at the Warner Gym, and Thursday, Jan. 30 from 7-9 p.m. Gym B Warner at Eastern Michigan University. The classes are free and open to both men and women. To register, email Fatma Jaber at fjaber@emich.edu.

Jan. 18 Police encountered a man yelling with a beer can in his hand at Ballard and West Cross streets at 8:38 p.m. Officers calmed the man down and found that he had warrants out for his arrest. The man was too inebriated to be taken to jail, so police released him to the hospital with a citation for drunkenness.

Purdue rocked by school shooting

A school shooting on Tuesday rocked Purdue University. According to CNN, a suspect was taken into custody after the shooting took place near the electrical engineering building. The Indiana school’s police chief said that the shooter targeted a single person, then left and was arrested by a city policeman.

Target breach suspects arrested

Two Mexican citizens who were arrested at the border on Tuesday were connected to the recent Target security breach that compromised an estimated 110 million customers’ credit card information.


Speaker discusses ways to better our youth

Eastern Michigan University hosted keynote speaker Geoffrey Canada in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day on Monday. He discussed his teaching techniques and the foundations to better America’s youth in a packed Student Center auditorium.

EMU hosts neighborhood meeting for LaForge corridor

Eastern Michigan University police hosted a community safety meeting designed to create a neighborhood meeting for residents living in the LeForge corridor Thursday in collaboration with representatives from Ypsilanti Police Department and Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

EMU students join with Red Cross to address fire prevention

The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance and the American Red Cross club at Eastern Michigan University teamed up with the Washtenaw-Lenawee County chapter of the American Red Cross on Saturday to raise awareness about home fire prevention and offer free smoke detectors to residents of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor.

Steve Horwitz, PhD. hosted a presentation on Monday in the Halle library. The presentation centered on one key question: “Do we really need central banks?”.

Human rights activist visits Ann Arbor

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement co-founder Omar Barghouti spoke in Ann Arbor on Friday about why Palestinian civil societies ask for global solidarity.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
