Search for new Student Affairs associate VP begins

Eastern Michigan University has geared up to hire on a new associate vice president of Student Affairs for the institution. Three candidates, Calvin Phillips, John Berry and Timothy Wise, have been given the opportunity to present their plans, objectives and goals for EMU if they are elected to the campus community.

UPDATE: Alleged robbery victim recants statement

The female victim of Thursday’s alleged unarmed robbery recanted her statement, according to an email update sent by Eastern Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety early Friday morning. The student originally reported having been struck from behind in the Rynearson Parking Lot on Hewitt Road, causing her to briefly lose consciousness.


Obama visits Ann Arbor to talk minimum wage

President Barack Obama toured Ann Arbor on Wednesday to promote a bill written to increase minimum wage from $7.40 an hour to $10.10 an hour. The bill will soon be brought before Congress.

Alum returns to discuss life as a diplomat

Julie A. Eadeh has lived in more countries than many people have lived in houses – Saudi Arabia, Iraq, China and Qatar to name a few. Her journey through life has roots to Eastern Michigan University, where she received her degree in history. On Monday, she came back to EMU to talk to students about possibly following her career path as a diplomat for the United States of America in the Department of State.

Income Tax Assistance— The Eastern Michigan University Accounting Club at the College of Business and Beta Alpha Psi will be providing income tax services – free of charge – through the “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance” program. This is offered to EMU students who meet requirements as well as members of the surrounding community. The following is the list of dates and locations for VITA: Friday, April 4, 10 a.m.

Speakers discuss African women who won Nobel Peace Prize

Eastern instructor, Joseph Engwenyu, told the audience about the first African woman ever to receive the honor; Wangari Muta Maathai. Maathai, who hailed from Kenya, won the award in 2004 for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.”

Residence hall prices to rise 4 percent

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents approved a 4 percent increase in the university residence halls’ room and board rates for the 2014-15 academic year at its regular meeting Tuesday. The increase is designed to pay for increased food costs, deferred maintenance expenses and a future plan to upgrade residence halls and dining facilities.

March 20 A female student reported being assaulted by her boyfriend at 11:48 a.m. The victim does not wish to press charges.

A look inside EMU's role in the EAA

Eastern Michigan University, along with the school district for the city of Detroit, signed an interlocal agreement with the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan on June 23, 2011. One of the university’s main motivators to sign the agreement was to play a helpful role in the education of Michigan children, according to President Susan Martin.

A glimpse into the EAA's past, future

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder had already raised the ire of residents in multiple cities, namely Detroit, when he empowered state administrators to take over city finances. Republican Snyder, who is currently in an election battle with Mark Schauer, a Democrat, has also empowered an arcane entity known as the Education Achievement Authority to take over school districts and public universities with low student achievement.

Lecture educates students on STIs

The Center for the Study of Equality and Human Rights at Eastern Michigan University hosted a lecture in McKenny Hall Thursday titled, “Promoting Equal Rates for STI Testing for LGBT Individuals.” The lecture highlighted how people perceive advertisements of Sexually Transmitted Infections testing for the LGBT community, confidential testing and communication between partners.

'Fast-A-Thon' encourages worship, self-growth

Matthew Berki came to Eastern Michigan University Tuesday to lecture on the importance of fasting at this year’s “Fast-A-Thon.” On the day of the event, people were encouraged to fast the entire day from sunrise to sunset. Then, they were welcomed to break their fast at sunset with a banquet hosted by the Muslim Student Association.
