With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many couples are planning their romantic dates for this weekend. With all of this love in the air, it is extremely important for students to be safe and make smart decisions while being intimate.

Feb. 7 Officers were called to Hoyt Hall for a verbal argument between a male student and a female student at 12:30 a.m. The dispute did not turn physical and the two students went to their respective rooms after police arrived.

Leadership symposium held in Student Center Monday

Eastern Michigan University’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosted a leadership symposium Monday evening in Student Center room 300, titled “Leadership Redefined: Advancing Youth Empowerment.” Participating organizations were the Poetry Society, Mentor2Youth and sororities Sigma Gamma Rho and Alpha Kappa Alpha.

NAACP hosts 'Women of History: Celebrating Our Queens'

Eastern Michigan University’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosted “Women of History: Celebrating Our Queens,” an event honoring the achievements of black women in history and at the university, in the Student Center Tuesday night.

Chiara Hensley named new ombuds

The Office of the Ombuds is located in the Student Center room 240 and open for any student experiencing challenges on campus. According to Hensley, the office handles a wide variety of student concerns including communication with professors, conduct issues, grade grievances, academic dismissal, tuition, medical appeals, billing issues and financial aid concerns. The Office of the Ombuds may also assist students with any other problems that they may encounter during their time at Eastern Michigan University.



	The men’s swimming team performs at Jock Jamz Tuesday night at Pease Auditorium. They took first place in the competition.

EMU Community Comes Together At Jock Jamz

Hundreds of students, coaches and athletes gathered at Pease Auditorium as a community Tuesday night for Jock Jamz, which was entertained by ten varsity athletic teams as they showed off their dancing and lip synching skills.


Eastern Michigan University Rec/IM expands hours

On Jan. 6, the Rec/IM increased its hours on Mondays-Thursdays in an effort to get students and faculty who might not have worked out because of night classes to show up. The expanded hours on Mondays-Thursdays are now 6:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. compared to the fall semester when it opened as usual, but closed down two hours early.


	Eastern Michigan University’s Psychology Department welcomed Ogai Ogas, a computational neuroscientist and author of “A Billion Wicked Thoughts: What the Internet Tells us about Sexual Relationships,” to the Student Center Thursday evening.

EMU alumna turns 105— Eastern Michigan University alumna Pat Crouch turned 105 on Thursday. Crouch earned her degree from Michigan Normal College, now known as Eastern Michigan University.

Student Government holds off-campus housing fair

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Government sponsored the Off-Campus Housing Fair on Thursday as part of EMU’s Safety Week. The event was held at the Student Center on campus and was designed to help students talk to different leasing professionals around Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor about the security they provide to their tenants.

Eastern Michigan University students seeking a way to get more involved in the campus community have the chance to have their voices heard. Student Government is now accepting applications for the positions of president and vice-president, and student senators.

Physical Plant addresses icy roads, walkways

The Eastern Michigan University Physical Plant explained the challenges it faced in keeping the campus roads and sidewalks ice-free this winter via an email sent to the EMU community on the evening of Friday, Feb.

Feb. 1 Officers responded to a noise complaint in Walton Hall at 12:59 a.m. and found a group of underage students with a small amount of alcohol in a dorm room. The students were not charged criminally, but may face consequences under the Student Code of Conduct.



Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
