Eastern to host Heart Walk for the first time

1 out of every 4 deaths in the United States can be attributed to heart disease, approximately 600,000 people per year. Some of these deaths could have been prevented through diet, nutrition, exercise and routine physicals.


Election results not ratified by Student Senate

·

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Senate met Tuesday night to ratify the 2014 Student Government Election results. If the 2014 election results were not ratified, the current student government terms of office would expire on Monday, April 28 and there would be no one with the authority under the Student Government Constitution and bylaws to ratify the election results, effectively terminating student government at EMU.

Attempted unarmed robbery in Alexander lot

Eastern Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating a reported attempted unarmed robbery that occurred in the Alexander paid parking lot around 8 p.m. Tuesday. There were no reported injuries. The suspect is described as a male, six feet tall, approximately 200 pounds wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

Miller wins presidential election

The Desmond Miller/Steven Cole ticket was named the winner of the 2014 Eastern Michigan University Student Government Presidential election on Saturday. The write-in ticket of Fatma Jaber/Chris VanWashenova was disqualified for multiple campaign violations, according to a report issued by student government Election Commission Chair Nto Mbeng Agbor.

Yankee air museum to honor Vietnam veterans

The Yankee Air Museum at 47884 D Street in Belleville Mich., intends to honor America’s fallen service members with a tribute and ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the Vietnam War exhibit. This event will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26 at 9 a.m.

DPS expanding patrol borders

More crime has been reported on Eastern Michigan University’s daily crime logs as EMU’s Department of Public Safety has expanded its patrol borders. It is important to remember that because more crime is being reported, it does not mean it was not happening before. It shows the investment in new officers by EMU and the ability of the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department and the Ypsilanti City Police Department to work together are creating a safer Ypsilanti community.

April 11 The Department of Student Conduct and Community Standards reported to police that a loud verbal dispute occurred between two students at Pittman Residence Hall. Police documented the incident and verbally warned both students.

Ypsi mayor recognized at awards ceremony

Ypsilanti Mayor Paul Schrieber was the recipient of the Community/University Collaboration Award presented by the Office of Academic Service-Learning, Nonprofit Leadership Alliance and the Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Community in an awards luncheon held Friday.

Eastern Michigan University’s interlocal agreement with the EAA and Detroit Public Schools has been embroiled in controversy since October 2013 when six teachers unions in Washtenaw County began boycotting EMU student teachers. The teachers unions refuse to end the boycott until EMU withdraws from the interlocal agreement with the EAA.


'Computational Thinking' attempts to change views of search engines

Robert M. Panoff, Ph.D., came to Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center Monday to present a dynamic and interactive visual approach to enhance how people interact with the world. Panoff’s presentation, entitled “Computational Thinking for All: The Power and the Peril” was sponsored by Shodor, a non-profit organization in Durham, North Carolina.

Search for Associate Vice President continues

Eastern Michigan University continued its search for a new Associate Vice President of Student Life on Wednesday in the Student Center. The final candidate, Timothy Wise, shared his ideas to advance EMU’s student support system. The other candidates, Calvin Phillips and John Berry, already presented their vision for the school.

False police report leads to serious consequences

A Timely Warning went out to the Eastern Michigan University community Thursday night regarding a female student who was reportedly the victim of an attempted armed robbery. About an hour later, an update to the Timely Warning was released stating that the female student had recanted her statement.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
