Eastern offering leadership minor in the fall

Eastern Michigan University has a new minor coming this fall called interdisciplinary leadership, which is set to expand knowledge and personal awareness skill sets in hopes of creating a worldly and organized student upon graduation.


BrotherHOOD creates sense of community

The program’s “barbershop” events have turned out to one of the most successful facets of the initiative. These events are aimed at creating a sense of community among men of color on campus and provide them with a support network at EMU.

May 29 Police arrested a woman near Oakwood Street at 5:35 a.m. for a bench warrant issued for failure to comply with the Court’s request in a 1998 case. Officers were called to the Lobby Shop in the Student Center at 11:16 a.m.

University begins search for new CFO

Eastern Michigan University is shopping for a new Chief Financial Officer. Its current CFO, John Lumm, has informed the University he plans to retire at the end of August.

‘Angola Horror’ lecture examines the value of failure

By examining horrors from the past, Eastern Michigan University technology students try to use their education to prevent similar mistakes from happening in the future. To aid them in this process, Charity Vogel, staff reporter at The Buffalo News and author of “The Angola Horror: The Train Wreck that Transformed American Railroads,” spoke to EMU students Wednesday night in the Student Center.

Economics professor shares thoughts on student debt

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the U.S. has accrued $1.2 trillion in student loan debt. While Eastern Michigan University has no way of determining exactly how much its current and former students owe, EMU’s students received $247,716,323 in aid from the university in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, stipends, tuition waivers and work-study programs. Carol Hogan, a professor of economics at EMU, agreed to sit down for an interview about student loan debt.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
