The veteran community has been at the forefront of America’s attention due to a decade of continuous warfare, but some Eastern Michigan University scholars said many of their fellow service members are reaping benefits they did not earn.EMU junior Ken Gergely served nearly 13 years in the Marines as infantryman and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan seven times.


Panel addresses misconceptions about Islam

Eastern Michigan welcomed Ahlam Issa and Dawud Walid to the McKenny Hall Ballroom Thursday to hold a panel discussion clarifying misconceptions about Islam. Ahlam Issa, a teacher and youth director, and Dawud Walid, the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, talked and answered questions through the hour discussion. Ahlam started by talking about women and why they wear the Hijab or the head scarf.



Students use their First Amendment Rights

Eastern Michigan University’s chapter of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) created free speech walls to raise student awareness of the First Amendment rights on Constitution Day, Wednesday morning near the Olds Robb Recreation Center.

The Eastern Michigan College of Business honored Regent Jim Webb and his wife Cathy Webb Wednesday. A classroom was named for the Webbs in recognition of their outstanding service to the COB as Eastern Michigan Alumni.

Sept. 5 Night watch personal reported a female student who was intoxicated in Best Residence hall at 4:20 a.m.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
