Olympic diver Jack Laugher visited Eastern Michigan University Tuesday to train with EMU’s diving team and the campus’s Legacy Diving Program.

EMU's work and hopes for Google Glass

Eastern Michigan University’s College of Technologies is using Google Glass to experiment with augmented reality.The department purchased two pairs of Google Glasses in July, and Phillip Cardon, one of the leading professors in the augmented reality experiments, said Google Glass technology is a stepping-stone to new possibilities.“This will revolutionize how we teach,” Cardon said.

A Students for Life sidewalk chalk display was defaced with drawings of swastikas Tuesday evening.EMU’s Students for Life is an on-campus chapter of the national pro-life organization, Students for Life of America.

LGBT community plant rainbow flag

EMU students created LGBT visibility by putting thousands of colored flags in the ground to create a large rainbow flag in the courtyard next to Pray-Harrold Sunday afternoon.EMU junior Alex Bakhaus, event coordinator for the LGBT Resource Center, said the main purpose of the flag display is to inform new students and those who don't know there are LGBT resources on campus that a community is here for them.

Alexander Music Building Staircase Under ConstructionCaution tape will block off the sidewalk between the back of Alexander Music Building and the side of Sill Hall as construction crews break down the old stairs and prepare to build a new entrance.

Regents extend Susan Martin's contract through July 2016

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents approved an extension of president Susan Martin’s contract from July 8, 2015 through July 7, 2016 at its regular meeting in Welch Hall Tuesday.Martin’s yearly salary has been increased from $300,000 to $340,000, effective November 1, 2014.



Students learn car safety tips

EMU Police Officer Candace Dorsey joined with Budget Towing owner Billy Salamay to provide a presentation and hands-on experience about car safety Wednesday afternoon at the McKenny Hall training suite.Dorsey said her job as the crime prevention coordinator for the police department involves going into the community and talking about safety.


EMU grad brings international perspective to local theater

Spinning Dot Theater is a new company in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area that creates global awareness by performing international plays.The brainchild of Jenny Koppera, a graduate of Eastern Michigan University, the theater is made up of three components, the professional company, the artist in residency and the youth theater company.

Jason Franz, a Cincinnati based art curator and educator, presented in Halle Library, Thursday night, on the development and continuation of his art gallery, Manifest."Manifest believes that people benefit from having excellent art around them," Franz said.

Ypsi the Klown comes to EMU

If you take the time to walk to and from class, or if you’re just wandering around on campus, then you might have come across the tag line written in white chalk, “Have you seen Ypsi the Klown?” For over a month this unknown entity has populated social media sites with his random appearances, cryptic messages and taking the time to pose for a photo with local fans.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions. 

Be sure to tune in weekly to stay up to date on all the Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti amusement!
