EMU fans set a couch on fire celebrating EMU's victory

Fans celebrating the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball victory over the University of Michigan near the intersection of Emmet Street and College Place, outside a house often referred to by students as the ROTC house, dragged a couch across its yard and set the couch on fire early Wednesday morning.

Faculty/Staff Lunch & Learn: Low-Sodium Cooking to Prevent Hypertension The office of Nutrition Services will be hosting the Lunch and Learn to demonstrate healthy recipes that are low in sodium. The event will be from 12 to 2 p.m., Dec. 11, in room 5 of Roosevelt Hall. EMU transitions to a tobacco-free campus

Eastern Michigan University recently adopted a tobacco-free campus policy. The Board of Regents voted to pass this policy Friday afternoon at their winter regular meeting. The tobacco-free policy is to move toward supporting a healthier learning, living and work environment for the EMU campus.

Research grants at EMU result in U.S patents for three professors

The Office of Research Development announced, in a statement, that Cory Emal, an associate chemistry professor, along with colleagues from the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland, has received US patent 8,759,327. And Vijay Mannari, a polymers professor and Subhas Ghosh, a professor in textiles have received US patent 8,764,851.

Digital Inclusion opens up Pop Up store in Ypsi

Digital Inclusion opened a Pop Up store, Nov. 24, in downtown Ypsilanti at 10 North Washington Street, slated to be open until Dec. 17. A social enterprise of Eastern Michigan University’s, The Business Side of Youth, Digital Inclusion, refurbishes, repairs and sells donated computers at a considerably lower price than brand-new.

Monday, Dec. 1 Police received an anonymous third party report about the possibility of unwanted and inappropriate touching.

DPS to get body cameras

Eastern Michigan University’s, Department of Public Safety will be investing $17,000 in body cameras for police officers. The cameras will be used for officers "on foot patrol, bicycle patrol and other activity not occurring near or around a police vehicle.”

EMU MESA Presents a Panel Discussion on Race: Making the Minority the Majority Middle Eastern Student Association, The Native American Student Organization, BLACK, and Latino Student Association will come together for a discussion on dealing with racial stereotypes in our community from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, in room 350 of the Student Center. The discussion is open to all students. The event is LBC approved.

EMU Regents call for stronger EMU-EAA partnership

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents will continue with the interlocal agreement with the Education Achievement Authority after a resolution to withdraw was shot down at the Regents' meeting in Welch Hall Friday. The Regents approved an amendment to that resolution that stated the Regents should continue with set guidelines for working with and improving the EAA over the next three years in a 6-2 vote.

EMU professor sets example with activism

Vanessa Marr, professor of women’s and gender studies at Eastern Michigan University, is an educator, an activist and someone who is concerned about the ways in which education and finding ways to connect with environmental learning impact the lives of people and their communities. “I see myself as a community-centered scholar,” she said.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
