Campus Life to hold rescheduled showing of 'American Sniper'

Campus Life will show the award-winning film, “American Sniper,” 8 p.m., Friday, in the Student Center Auditorium. In an email sent to Eastern Michigan University students, faculty and staff, Geoff Larcom, executive director of media relations, said the film will be followed by a “moderate dialogue that will touch on issues raised by the movie.” The film was originally scheduled for two showings at 8 p.m.

Susan Martin leaves a legacy at EMU

After seven years in the captain’s seat, university president Susan Martin is feeling bittersweet about stepping down in July. When she took office in 2008, Martin was ready to turn things around. “Eastern had been through some challenging times and turnover of leadership and everybody was just down,” Martin said.

Protests result in postponing of 'American Sniper' showing

The students who participated in the protest of the movie “American Sniper” Friday night in the Student Center said the shutting down and postponement of the showing was not their original intent. Four students were cuffed and detained after 40 students took the stage during the 8 p.m.

Brewery and improv come together at the Pointless Brewery and Theatre

Beer and improvisational theatre lovers in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area can soon enjoy a space that combines both. Eastern Michigan University Alumni, Tori and Jason Tomalia, will open Pointless Brewery and Theatre, 3014 Packard Road, Ann Arbor, this summer. Tori said the population in the area appreciates the “mind-set” of theater and craft beer. “[Improv theater is] super creative and really fresh and sort of instantaneous,”she said.

Gallery opens featuring ground breaking women of EMU

"In Her Shoes: Forging Paths at EMU" is a new exhibit opening Thursday at McKenny Gallery. According to a press release from the university's department of communications, the exhibit will be about the paths women have forged and the barriers women have broken both at Eastern and beyond.

EMU cancels Life in Color

Eastern Michigan University announced today that they cancelled the Life in Color concert that was scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at the Convocation Center.

Two graduate students at EMU offer an outlet for EMU students battling addiction

Students for Recovery is a new student organization on campus. SFR, is dedicated to promoting the academic and social well-being of students who are recovering from addictions. Two graduate assistants in the School of Social Work Aaron Suganuma and Miriam Shabazz, who are both on track to graduate with master of social work degrees in spring, co-founded the organization.

Center for Multicultural Affairs to host "fighting Islamophobia"

The Center for Multicultural Affairs will hold “Fighting Islamophobia,”6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Room 310B in the Student Center. Jim Tran, who organized the event, said students can learn about the basics of Islam and its “involvement in the world today.” “This event is important because there are people that do not know enough about the Islamic faith, so in turn they make assumptions [about] it,”he said. CMA reached out to Eastern Michigan University’s Muslim Student Association to help pick a lecturer. Senior Immad Ahasari, MSA president, said they picked Mustapha El-Turk, a religious leader at the Iona Masjid, Iona, Michigan, because of his credibility. “The main point of what we really want is a productive discussion,”he said.

Women of Excellence luncheon 2015

The Women’s Resource Center held its 25th annual Women of Excellence Lunch Thursday afternoon in the Student Center. The three winners of the Women of Excellence award were Suzy Albert, Fitness Initiatives Graduate Assistant, professor Elizabeth Currans in the women’s and gender studies department and professor Rebecca Martusewicz in the college of education. Martusewicz said it is an honor to win. “The women who nominated me are all powerful and brilliant young women so for me to have them give me this kind of respect is just huge,” she said.


"I hadn't heard about it. I hope they get someone good to replace her," Anna Bolt, ECA student.
