Two students killed in automobile accident

Two Eastern Michigan University students, Jordan Hopkins, 23, and Shannise Heady, 21, were killed in an automobile accident on Hewitt Road north of Michigan Avenue early Sunday morning, EMU said in a statement today. Heady, a junior from Hazel Crest, Ill., was a forward on the women’s basketball team.

Jock Jams at EMU

The 14th Annual Jock Jams was held Thursday, Jan. 22 at Pease Auditorium by the Student Athlete Advisory Council. It brings comradery to the sports teams across the board and it was a great event to bring everyone together for some lighthearted fun.

Reporter, author visits EMU to talk Detroit revival

John Gallagher, journalist and author, visited Eastern Michigan University Tuesday evening to kick off the three-part lecture series, “The Future of Urban Michigan,” hosted by the Political Science department. Gallagher is a veteran reporter at the Detroit Free Press, where he co-wrote the award-winning enterprise story “How Detroit went broke” with EMU and Echo alumnus Nathan Bomey.

ASA tries to break down cultural divide

During the Martin Luther King Day celebration, Eastern Michigan University hosted 13 academic program—many of which were LBC approved. The African Student Association hosted their first academic program Monday afternoon, titled “The African/African-American Divide.” The program was a panel lead discussion about breaking the barrier between the African and African-American cultures.


Dick Gregory gives keynote address for EMU MLK Day celebration

Comedian, humanitarian activist and civil rights activist, Dick Gregory, graced the stage Monday in the Student Center Auditorium to speak in celebration of MLK day at Eastern Michigan University. The event not only filled the auditorium but had an overflow of people in room 310 of the Student Center eager to see Gregory speak.

Martin Luther King Day Breakfast To kick-off MLK day, the free MLK breakfast will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Students chanted “No Justice, no peace!” in reference to the recent shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and sang the civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome.” The procession made several stops at various buildings and memorials including the Marshall Building and the Cesar Chavez fountain. And members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sang a spiritual melody while embracing the MLK memorial statue.

Star lecturer Delph talks happiness

Students lined the room, sat in the isles and jostled each other for space to hear Ronald Delph deliver his message for the fourth installment of the Honors College’s Star Lecture Series in an over capacity Halle Library Auditorium Tuesday. “Happiness is something we can control,” Delph said.

Introducing The Eastern Echo’s newest event and news based podcast, Scoop on the Scene. These weekly episodes will be hosted by the organization’s Digital Editor, Julez DeShetler. She intends to bring awareness to the events happening on an around campus to Echo listeners. 

DeShetler’s goal with the podcast is to encourage students and community members to get involved in an educated, safe and fun manner. She will list various events to choose from in addition to sharing the key details of said events. 

These podcasts can be expected to come out near the weekends and be no longer than 10-15 minutes.

For the week of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20, DeShetler includes events such as sports, a pub crawl, yoga, a movie in the park, Study Abroad Fair and training sessions.
